TRIMBO REPORT: USA vs EU

Very interesting report.

Quote
If the European Union were a state in the USA it would belong to the poorest group of states. France, Italy, Great Britain and Germany have lower GDP per capita than all but four of the states in the United States. In fact, GDP per capita is lower in the vast majority of the EU-countries (EU 15) than in most of the individual American states. This puts Europeans at a level of prosperity on par with states such as Arkansas, Mississippi and West Virginia. Only the miniscule country of Luxembourg has higher per capita GDP than the average state in the USA. The results of the new study represent a grave critique of European economic policy.

Stark differences become apparent when comparing official economic statistics. Europe lags behind the USA when comparing GDP per capita and GDP growth rates. The current economic debate among EU leaders lacks an understanding of the gravity of the situation in many European countries. Structural reforms of the European economy as well as far reaching welfare reforms are well overdue. The Lisbon process lacks true impetus, nor is it sufficient to improve the economic prospects of the EU.

EU versus USA is written by Dr Fredrik Bergström, President of the Swedish Research Institute of Trade, and Mr Robert Gidehag, until recently Chief Economist of the same institute and now President of the Swedish Taxpayer's Association.

PS...might subject to change... in the future

Comparing applies to oranges.

Average state in US vs Average state in EU ? Right after 15 nation EU took in 10 nations with 1/3 of its own GDP ?

Accept Mexico as a new state in the union and see what that does to averages...

Institude of trade... I guess flashy name and website is all it takes those days.

Well, we neither keep our credit cards maxed nor need to churn out thousands of armored Humvees every month... And that's what GDP is really measuring as far as I know.

Luxembourg isn't a real country, it's just a big bank with it's own town.

To quote Eurostat:
.
Quote
The GDP per capita in Luxembourg tends to be overestimated, due to the large share of cross-border workers in total employment. While contributing to GDP, they are not taken into consideration as part of the resident population which is used to calculate GDP per capita.

Ireland on the other hand is officially the second richest country in the EU and better than  Switzerland which is another big bank. Norway does better but they have OIL

So as Luxembourg is not really a country we win.

You know why? By making the country attractive to US investment and by lowering taxes not least to corporations.

Take that

What does it matter to me what the GNP is? Can you not live a full and satisfying life in a poor country?

When you are told from a young age about the american dream of being able to  achieve your wildest dreams isn't it soul crushing for the 99.9999999% of people who don't. (That is not just the US i think it is most western countries).

People living in developed countries suffer from much higher rates of depression.
