Possible Drop Tank Bug & E6B
« on: December 23, 2004, 02:08:51 PM »
While doing some research on the Allied Army Birds, I came across a wierd event.  I had a P-40E 75% fuel and 75 gallon drop tank.  While in the air I had 255 gallons of fuel, as said by the E6B. In the cockpit it reads as 75 gallons on the droptank, correctly.  While the E6B was up I dropped the tank... and WOW, I noticed that I had dropped 146 gallons when I dropped the tank. So now the E6B was reading 109 gallons of fuel, which was 75% fuel internal. Now the drop tank can only hold 75 gallons, but I dropped 146 gallons of fuel (a problem in itself since the P40E only used a 52 gal tank).

Now I don’t know how this figures in the weight and wing loading but it could be significantly higher than it should be with drops. This would adversely affect ROC for any aircraft that depends on DTs.

After I took up the P-40E I took up the P-51D with 2 Droptanks, 75 gallons each.  Wow again, I dropped 300 gallons of fuel, as shown by the E6B. I don't know if this has been modeled into the flight model, but I thought I would bring it up on here.

did the same thing with P-51 just to test. The E6B is doubling the amount of fuel in the DTs. Plane tanks are correct, and the cockpit reading is correct (150 gal for 2 tanks), but E6B is adding 300 gal for 2 tanks.
