NATO exercises against USSR
« Reply #60 on: January 02, 2005, 09:14:21 AM »
Just from reading some stuff that I probably shouldn't have seen as a teenager my Dad's unit was assigned to the reinforcements that were scheduled to fly out of the US within 72 hours of a Soviet attack into West Germany. The areas that they were supposed to move into front line positions by that time were going to be located in the Belgium and French border regions. Supposedly the NATO forces were going to try and trade land for time until we could get enough men and material into Europe to make a difference. Also I have read ideas from the other side that Soviet tactics were sort of a beat at the wall till it broke sort of thing.

You they always say Soviet quality in hardware was inferior. I have long said that  massive quantity has a quality all its own and if you can't stop enough of the other guys then you get beat no matter how bad their equipment was/is.

Yes, there is.  I can't find a good picture of it online, but I got to stick my head up into the bomb bay once.

Here we go.  The racks extend downwards when the doors open.

The white perforated panels are spoilers that help push the weapon away from the aircraft after release and reduce buffeting.
