"Beyond Enemy Lines"
Framom främsta linjen

If you don't mind subtitles its a good international squad based flick.

"A movie based on real wartime diaries tells the
story of the Swedish speaking Finns' infantry regiment 61.
The story follows the regiment during the Continuation War
from 1942 to 1944 and from Syväri to the Karelian Isthmus
where they faced some of the most grueling battles against
the Soviet Union."

Yes, it was quite a good movie, went to see it when it was in the movies here... However, it doesn't have much aerial action, some IL2's attacking the Finnish troops.

The movie is quite different from previous Finnish-made warfilms in a couple of ways.:
1) It's almost entirely in Swedish language
2) It contains some interviews of the veterans involved.

Additionally, it has some actual wartime footage in the film, which creates quite an immersion.

I would recommend this film for at least everyone who can understand Swedish, and with subtitles it's quite a film as well. I'm not that fluent in Swedish myself so I relied on the subtitles quite a bit.

It's about a squad of Swedish speaking Finns who are doing beyond-the-line activities, and there's even a bit about the Prince of Sweden visiting Finnish frontlines.

Guys, I understand your sentiments, but can you just make it clear who these "Swedish speaking Finns" were.
Were they the ethnic Finns - citizens of Sweden
who volunteered to fight in the Finnish army or were they just Swedish-speaking Finns -
citizens of Finland ?

Finland, even today, has two official languages: finnish and swedish.
Finns have to study swedish language for years, which is at least 3 to 6 years, at 'lower' school and high school (3 years if swedish becomes the students B-foreign language, in which case english is usually the A-foreign language. If its the other way around, then 3 years less of english and 3 years more swedish)
If continues studies at higher degrees after high school, which most people does, they have to study even more swedish.

Nowadays most finn-swedes also speaks finnish - after all it is their second native language ;)
Perhaps most whats left of those who might not understand finnish, are living at Åland, which is a small automical island with some 20,000 people. It is also a de-militarized zone. However they are thought to have more private owned guns than there are people :D

Otherwise finn-swedes only represents a minor part of finnish population, who still do have quite much power in the goverment (too much).
In my opinion, what I refer to as forced swedish classes, is waste of educational resources.

Thats how it is with swedish language in Finland.
A long long long long time Finland was part of sweden, but then lost in a treaty to russians.
After Finland gained indendence from Russia, there were still alot people of swedish origin and who had alot of power (land lords et cetera).

Thank you Fishu very much.
Now I see. It's practically what I have in my family tree. Grandfather - the Ukrainian-speaking Don Cossack of Celtic descend married to Ukrainian-speaking Latvian girl. Their daughter - my mother marries Ukrainian lad of Severin descent with possible Armenian roots. And here I come, with the first-spoken language being Russian, second - English, and Ukrainian - only the third.:)

Still I'm a little bit disappointed because I was going to nail this film as a propaganda effort if these movie soldiers were a part of the 3rd "Swedish" company of the 11th tank reconnaissance  SS batallion of the Division "Nordland".

There where also "real" Swedes fighting as Volunteers on the Finnish side against the Russians, not only fighting for the SS-Nordland.

Just to make things clear. ;)

I went and saw it because I was curious.

It's an 'docutainment' meaning everything in the movie happened (or so the film alleges), nothing is added  and the film is interspersed with interviews of veterans (one at least).

"Beyond enemy lines" Lol, what a blatant attempt to follow in the tailcoats ... there's zero similarities between the two. The film struck me as low budget, which isn't neccesarily bad for it's purpose.

What is it's purpose ? Taking a guess it's to remind, honor the efforts made by the swedish-speaking unit(s) in the finnish war.

For people with general or specific interest in the finnish WW2 war(s) it's worth seeing I think. I'm a little surprised to see it made it to Amerikat' :/

Yeah, yer right,  and after the "real" Finns switched the sides  some of the "real' Swedes  joined SS Division "Nordland". Their company leader was also a Swede, SS Obersturmfuhrer Hans Person.

Just to make things even more clear;)

Hmm, this is probably the one I saw on VCD, called in Russian "V tylu sovetskogo vraga" ("Behind the lines of Soviet enemy"). Didn't feel like buying a 2xVCD set for $10, and never saw it in DiVX or DVD :(

So the only Finnish war film I have seen was "Rukajarven Tie". Quite good, at least Soviet soldiers are not "evil Asians on shaggy mounts", but some scenes are funny...

Still looking for subtitles for "Winter War" in Russian or English... The film looks great, but I don't understand anything in Finnish except "terve" and "sattana perkele" :(

By the way, anyone saw Cockoo ? An exellent modern WWII film IMHO.

There's a DVD version of Talvisota with English subtitles. I just recently bought a collector's box with "Tuntematon sotilas" (1955) and "Talvisota" (1989), both had English subtitles. I think that you can buy them separately too. The DVD's were released by Finnkino.
