Ultralight plane for sale............
« on: January 12, 2005, 03:50:12 PM »
I've been seriously missing my ultralight since moving here.  I cant even begin to think about shipping it to Hawaii right now, and its just collecting dust and rust.  I was considering selling it and just buying another.

This one is somewhat similar to mine, although its a step up.  Mine doesnt have doors and is obviously missing other things this one has, as mine weighs close to 80 pounds less than this one.  Max spd., cruise and stall sound about the same.

Question, its been some time since I bought one, and I didnt exactly pay full price for mine since I knew the previous owner and he cut me one hell of a deal on it.  I have no idea what one is worth.  Does this price seem fair for what he has?  I wish I could figure out how to post pictures, I'd put up a few of mine.  Any comments would be appreciated.

I would never buy one with such a small engine. 28hp? That is just too underpowered to be safe.

The formula for a Trike (type of ultralight) is usually the wing engine and fuselage all cost about a third of the total price each. A bigger engine needs a more robust wing so that is why the price changes with engine size.

The easiest thing to value on the ultralight that is for sale is the engine. It also has a BRS chute. Between the two you can work out a fair price for the plane. I would say 4 k is a fair price.

However there are some things in this listing that raise warning flags for me.

The guy selling it says he weighs 160 lbs. That is really light. I can see him selling it to a 200 lb guy and then saying later that the guy is too heavy to fly in it.

Second he says it takes off in 100' with a 10 knot headwind. I would not fly a plane that light in 10 knots of wind. I suspect that the thing is so underpowered he knows it barely gets off the ground with even him aboard. He throws the head wind in to make it look like it springs off of the runway but in fact with 10 knots of wind it probably at 40% of the stall speed.

I was thinking that myself.  I cant remember the specs on my engine, but I was sure it put out more than that.  Considering I've never been a light guy, and I was right around 200 lbs. when I last flew it, and it was about as fast as the speeds he listed.  Of course, mine is lighter than that too, which more than offsets the difference in our weight.  Still, I would almost swear my HP rating was in the 50-60 range.
