need some help (computer prob)
« on: February 04, 2005, 06:25:04 PM »
About a week ago my puter started acting up.  My internet speed went from 1100kbs to about 200 kbs.  My computer starts locking up when I open adobe 7.0..   Games freez and studder.  (did not happen before) and ram usage has increased by 25-30% leaving me with about 150k of ram free to run apps. I have 512k of pc 2100 ram.   The only new program I have down loaded lately is the new adobe reader 7.0 and a trial version of photo shop.

My first thought was a virus.  So  I scanned with AVG and came up clean.  I searched for ad ware and found 2 items that were trackers, erased them.  No effect. still having problerms.  I defraged my hard drive, no change.  I ran norton check up and had 2 registry errors, no change.  It seems like something is eatting up ram big time but I don't know how or what to do about that.

Any thoughts???

Reinstall windows.

That's a new install on a seperate drive, then delete the old one.  If you don't have a seperate drive then partition the one you do.  Your new windows install will be on D: rather than C: but so what.

And believe me, this'll be quicker.

Have you looked in task manager to see what processes are running, and how much cpu and ram they are using? Does anything stand out?

Get Microsoft AntiSpyware. Virus checkers/firewalls are not perfect. MS AS has already removed 5 items of spyware from my system.

Swoop - I have one of my hard drives partitioned like that. My C drive is the redundant Windows ME partition, and I have W2000 Pro on D. Works fine.

svchost.exe is a critical process do not delete!, and your right about iexplore.exe

dpcnav.exe? Google it, I'm sure you'll find out.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

DPCNav is the Direcway program running on a computer attached to a set of DW4000 modems. It controls the modems, and sends and receives data to and from the modems. When running, it shows as a DW or BE icon in the system tray at the lower right of a Windows screen.

Sounds like a virus to me. Make sure you have the latest set of virus definitions. There is a new one spreading thru MSN Messenger, the Bropia virus.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

there are viruses out there that hide under the 'svchost' process..

best bet is to look at whats starting up through msconfig... or through the run entry in windows registry... thats the best way to see the viruses locations if they're there

would running sfc, system_file_checker.exe, detect svchost.exe or other system files which are corrupt substitutions installed by virus/trojans?

rasker, don't understand a word you said.   But thanks!!!

I just spent 2 hrs on the phone with the cust. support at direct way.  We went through and checked the signal strengths on all the avail freq I can get up here and then he called the "ops center" as he called it and had them change my recieve freq and mode, and also the transponder code.  I waited 20 min (during which I deleted norten AV)  and did a web set up, then a speed test.  I am back to about 900kbs download and since deleting norten I have most of my  ram back.    I want to get more ram but do you think it would be better to go to 512k of pc 2700 or add another 256k (total of 1x512, 1x 256)  of pc 2100??
