Ok I will correct myself here.The History channel had a run down from early ww2 to present day fighter fighter bombers.B 17 was voted best all around bomber.P 51 was voted best all around aircraft for what it was doing AND fighting against in the time it flew.Now I love the sound of the Spit,the 38 and the Hogs,but this isnt what Im talking about.Im talking overall ability.

Well in that case its a run between the 38 and the F4U . The spit and the pony are left behind in range+ordenance+air /ground combat+survivability vs those 2.

In all those programs on tv they usually portray the p51 as the best merely because it had so many air to air kills and of course, because of its good performance.

They dont mention however, that by the time the P-51 came along the LW had been seriously attritted by the RAF and p38/p47 + russian front, germany had begun to feel the effects of the strategic bombing via lack of fuel which cut down the training time of replacement pilots (which the P-51 killed a large bunch of later on.. badly trained replacements) and were sent out against the LW in large numbers (whereas the 38/47/RAF were usually outnumbered by the LW before the arrival of the pony).

The P-51 was lots cheaper to produce and maintain and train pilots in than the 47 or the 38 as well.

I think all planes shined in their respective roles and in the time period they fought. But to say the P-51 is the best of them is like claiming the Me262 was the best fighter of ww2 just because it had such a huge performance advantage over all other craft. Its their impact on the war and when that impact was made that should determine which fighter was the best.

And in that case id say the p-38 and the p-47 are tied for 1st place.

I'd throw the 38 out of that equation. The F6F would hold the second slot after the Jug.
The Hellcat kicked booty in the Pacific as the Jug did in the European theater. Mechanic posted my favorite Jug shot.

But if I could put my butt in one it would be the Corsair.

Of course if there was a 190-A series flying, I'd take that over any of them

and a very close second has to be the P38.

Personally, I'd say the FW-190 would be the best "overall" prop plane in WWII.

That an American channel votes an American plane as the best WW2 fighter is hardly suppricing. Anything but a vote for an American plane would be chocking.

Im not saying that the Pony aint a damn fine plane because it is. Just that when in a such a tight competition with Dora´s and Spits an American channel is always gona vote American.

If we go purely on looks then the top 3 ww2 planes in my book are Spit, Pony and P40. I cant say which one looks best of these 3 but they are all sweet planes.

Performance wise. I propably thing its the Dora that was the best fighter in WW2.

No shame to the Pony and its pilots but they fought a demoralized LW with untrained pilots in the cockpit.

Most important fighters of WW2 where no doubt Spits and Hurries. They won the most important battle of WW2.

You put Shane & GBall in this duo of chit-box, rusted out, oil-leaking, tin-roof, el-crapo planes (see photos below).. an La5 & N1k.. and I'll tell ya' what..

They'll shred them "pretty birds" (see all photos above) to smitherines with monotonous regularity ~

Note the La5 with flat tires, garish paintjob, and bristling with "Kill" stars! (definately Shanes' plane, a flying insult to all that's decent! LOL!!)
