Tax guru's?
« Reply #15 on: February 07, 2005, 06:27:03 PM »
A friend of mine used to shun my tax guy, saying he was sticking with H&R Block because of how reliable they were.

A couple months ago, he got a letter from the IRS saying 'Thanks for the check, but, uh, did you mean to file any taxes?'  Apparently H&R Block had done all the normal work, told my friend how much he owed (when really, he should have gotten a refund, but anyhow) and then neglected to actually file his taxes.

He's asked for the number of my tax guy this year.

With the cost of Turbo tax minus your 1099 income you come out in the red about $15.00+/-
Go to the post office and get the 1040A and file yourself...

The cost of tax software is itself deductible.

Love Turbo Tax. Get it cheap at Best Buy or Office Max.

taxact.com

been using it for several years, nice and easy.  the basic version is free (download or do it online), the deluxe version is like 13 bucks.  I get the deluxe package with a state version for 20 bucks.

Screw the $20, dont mention it.  If you get audited in the next 5 years (before the statute of limitations is up) you may suffer a penalty+interest as much as $10.

There is no statue of limitations on what you owe the government, only what it is liable to pay You.  The fine and peanalties for that 20 bucks are not based on 20 bucks, and it would cost you a lot of money, as well as open you up for hassles for the rest of your life.

in a word.... no

you have to go through one of their "providers" or whatever.

thats part why im so PO'd, because if i file the long form, i MUST then do the long state form, which is a fugin NIGHTMARE of a clusterF of a form with the worst instructions ever written.

to all:

if i get turbo tax will it do the state also?

does it go on the internet, and file these itself?

thanks for the advise, though i will be forgoing food to by turbotax LOL
I don't know what to put here yet.
