Track IR + eDimensional 3D glasses = nausea
« on: February 08, 2005, 01:38:57 PM »
So I thought... wouldn't it be great to have 3D vision AND head tracking on at once while playing AH2.   I have found that the endless flickering of eDimensional 3D glasses combined with the Track IR system very closely resembles being extremely intoxicated.  Some of the features are double vision, inability to focus on one item, slowed reactions, and stomach wrenching nausea.  Before trying this, I was very much looking forward to future promise of a full "virtual reality" experience.  But having your eyes seeing things move in a 3D environment, hearing sounds in a 3D space all while your body feels no motion is very disorienting.  Luckily, it only take a few minutes to readjust after shutting the system down.  Either system works great on its own, but together create a rather unsatisfying gaming experience.  Though, for some people, I'm sure this may seem like a normal night in the MA  =)

Anybody else tried this combination with success?

Dont have the glasses, but have Vector... felt nauseated a bit for first few times and got better.

Give it time. do it in short spurts, and see if your body will compensate for it.

Those glasses are only 800x600 right?

I would be nauseas by just testing to write the interface. Couldn't put them on for over 1 min and would be hurting for 2 hours.

Strange thing is , never have a problem in the real stuff.

The problem is that good quality displays for VR head units are prohibitively expensive.  So the ones we have now for normal human money has severe limitations.  Im in the camp with HT on this one.  I used a set for a week, and while wathcing movies was ok....playing games hurt....not just nasea, but a headache....and I never get headaches.

Ah well....hopefully in a few years!

The eDimensional 3D glasses are electronic LCD shutters in the form of eyeglasses - no display is actually projected.  The computer and monitor do all the work by rendering alternating views that form the 3D environment on the screen.  The glasses merely block the vision of the monitor, one eye at a time at a frequency that is 1/2 of your monitor refresh rate.  So your 60 fps display becomes 30 fps when viewed through the glasses.  More info here http://www.edimensional.com/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=29

I suppose it may be possible to get used to the physically unpleasant effects, but its so miserable with zero enhancement to gameplay, why do it?
