Stick Scaling Settings (Big Pics)
« on: November 06, 2000, 08:24:00 PM »
I've been asked in the arenas a few times about stick settings and it's bloody hard to explain it over the chat.  So here are some visual aids.

The red curve in the lower of the two blue boxes is the actual response curve - control surface response (y-axis of curve) vs. stick position (x-axis of curve).

I set up roll pretty agressively because there is no "bounce" on this axis.  But I still want a nice progressive response, which helps aiming.

Pitch and yaw scaling are set up almost the same, with a very gentle response to small stick motions.  This is really helpful for aiming and reducing "bounce" from quick corrections.

Deadbands are set to the minimum value that will prevent stick "spikes" or "noise" from causing movement of the scope trace (moving trace of stick position in the upper blue box)

Dampers can be used to control spiking problems and also can prevent "bounce" problems.

Since I went to a USB stick (CH CombatStick USB), I was able to set my dampers to zero and deadbands to near zero.  I'm able to control "bounce" with the scaling sliders and control any small spikes with deadbands.

Thanks funked, this might help me with some stick spiking probs I've been having.

Will take a little time getting used to the new settings though; gonna try out the rudder ones now

Just a note:

I never scale roll.  I always set all roll sliders at 100% and always have.  I learned that from Worr.    I find that the plane's natural roll inertia is all the scaling I need in roll.

The rest looks great, but try all 100 on roll.

Guys..

Keep in mind that Funked flys a T&B most times and his settings may suit the Spit.

My deadband & dampening are the same but you would watermelon if ya seen my scaling. As im mostly flyin p51 & Typhoon my scaling is not even close to Funkeds.

Scaling is also dependant on Jstick, Digital, analog, TM, CH Products. You really need to find a plane you fly a lot and work your Scaling from there.

Dog out......

Good point Wardog.

Stick scalings will depend a LOT on what plane you fly, what machine you use, what joystick etc.  Most importantly, it will depend on your personal preferences.

Take something like this as a starting point, but play around with it.  Try different things and test until you find something that helps you out.

For example, I actually use a really strange pitch curve.  Mine starts around 50% or a bit more, then goes DOWN in the mid range, and then scales back up at the end.  Why would I do this?  Simple.... it's in the middle where I need the help... that's where I tend to be with the stick when I am riding the stall horn.

Play with the scalings, especially pitch, until you have an idea what works for you.  The beauty is that you can do this IN FLIGHT.  I recommend going offline and shooting drones.  Kill a couple and then adjust... lather rinse repeat.  Practice different types of shots, snapshots and G loaded tracking shots.  Also, don't be afraid to try BIG changes.  You can change it back easily, so experiment!

Another thing that is a factor is how you trim your plane.  That determines what part of the red curve you are operating on.  If you trim your plane obsessively like I do, you will usually be operating in the left part of the red curve (small stick deflection).  But if you are out of trim you may need large stick inputs (middle and right part of red curve).

PS WD these are basically the same settings as I used in WB, flying Fw 190A-4 primarily.
