Memory upgrade?
« on: February 15, 2005, 04:24:51 PM »
I have an athlon XP 2100 system with 512 RAM and a ATI 9600 pro. Would I likely see an FPS gain if I added another 512 RAM? I currently run 1280x1024 and 512 textures about midway on all sliders and see about 60 fps best case to about 15 fps in worst case.

Or should I just put that money into a nice athlon64 system?

Additional memory beyond 512 would be a waste on that system. Save your money for a new mobo/athlon 64/memory.

Another 512 megs of ram will gain mabey 5 to 10 fps and if you get good quality ram you cam always use it in a better system later.

I have exactly what you have except I have Athlon 1800XP.  I get great frame rates with the sliders at min. specs.  Kill the eye candy for now and save for a better system.  With 2.02 out, I still think the graphics are awesome at min. specs.  My FPS goes anywhere from 25-100. ( Yes even lower in huge furballs, but I think even the better systems out there have FPS probs in huge furballs to some degree.)

I find having the sliders at min is actually tactically dis-advantageous. Trees and GV's pop up with no warning, and ack is not visible from far away at all.

Guess I'm saving for this or similar
