Should control of the internet be given to the UN?
« on: March 02, 2005, 06:11:42 PM »
I don't think the UN has any claims to the Internet.  If they get control of any type it will lead to some sort of tax/wealth redistrabution BS.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

China's ambassador to the United Nations last week called for international controls on the Internet.

Chinese Ambassador Sha Zukang told a UN conference that controls should be multilateral, transparent and democratic, with the full involvement of governments, the private sector, civil society and international organizations.

"It should ensure an equitable distribution of resources, facilitate access for all and ensure a stable and secure functioning," he said at the conference on Internet governance.

Sha said China opposes the "monopolization" of the Internet by one state, a reference to the Untied States, which ultimately controls the digital medium.

They can barely control their bowel movements.  Control of the internet should be in the Pentagon.

First I was like wtf, but then I realised the chinese doesn't want the USA to control the internet, but rather something else, which is made up of multiple countries.

Reading some of the replies, I wonder do they really think the USA could do any better... especially when alot of the people in charge are rather conservative.
You simply cannot rely on a conservative control of the internet.

not only that.. but to give up control of the internet to the UN means the US will be open to economic sanctions VIA the internet by any UN member.

Think about it... US does something the useless UN doesnt like? Other members call for sanctions and voila! E-commerce can be instantly affected.

Just one of the many problems that would cause.

Yeah right, the world is out there to get you, because they're all anti-american....

A news flash: it could been done already without anyone being in control of the internet and even without UN.

THANK YOU! finally somone with actual thaught behind his post

HOW can you control something that doesnt really have a physical location or body?

How bout we hand over the breathing of AIR to the UN.  They can pass resolution after resolution to help sifle the Americans over breathing of Air with our sports and jogging and such.

BAH!  this is just down right scary when you think about it.  The one world govt wanting control over all electronic traffic and such.
