Question on bullet hits/damage.
« on: March 14, 2005, 06:43:51 PM »
Do they effect the structural integrity of a given part of the plane when hit?

You can pull X amount of G's with any said A/C before it is hit with rounds.

If a wing is struck with 50cals (or any other round) but not taken off, does that wing still hold the same structural integrity after the hits as it did before it took hits? IE pull the same G's, take the same stresses as before?

Common sense says it should not. But is that the way HTC has it modeled?

Just curious.

Thanks.

No.  Hitech answered this question within the last 90 days.  Max stress load isnt affected by damage.

Just how much would a plane be effected if it's 'tattered' with bullets? Is there any objective test data to model this kind of thing in?

Let's say, about 50% of the stressed skin on the wing is 'tattered' due to gunfire, without any damage to the internal structures like supports or spars. If that plane normally fails under something like 12G stress, would that 12G limit be reduced to 11, 10, or 9??

Besides, I think if that kind of damage is modelled, the cannon-armed planes would receive additional benefits, since blowing off surfaces is superbly more effective than drilling them with AP rounds. IMO some kind of 'compensation' would be required for the HMG armed planes.. such as API rounds with higher chance of causing fires, or damaging more delicate internal structures(which, AH2 planes don't have yet - supercharger mechanisms.. throttle control.. rods and cables.. etc etc).

If your wing had a 20mm hole in it, you would loose lift, and it would start creating drag.

The best game IMHO for you to "feal" the damage, is IL-2 or Janes ww2 fighters.

If you so much as take a bullet hit to the wing, your plane will let you know it by "feal".

Im sure its all just a matter of "when we get to that part" for hitech, im sure there working on the graphic parts first, then if they wanna add "0.3- lift" for a 20mm hit, or 0.1- lift for a .50 or .30cal bullet hole.

but then YOUR computer would also be sending much more "im wounded here, and here..and here" packets to the server, so everyone would "see" your bird flyin' all funky.

part of the reason it is so easy to land damaged rigs, is besides looseing MAJOR body parts, little damage like tears, holes..maby even bent wings from max speed diveing .ect have NO real effect on how the plane feals, and flys.

All in good time, im sure.
then we will be like,WRAAAh i got hit by a 20mm in my 109's wing now i cant go under 250 or im going to loose half my climb rate, and start auto rolling like crazy or whatever.

anyhow, my two cents.

If a .50 cal round goes thru a wing spar, no damage? If 20 .50 cal rounds goes thru a wing, no damage? If 4 of those 20 rounds are incendiary thru the fuel tanks, no damage? A friend of mine flew FAK in D'Nam and took one .50 cal round into his engine from 2k. The gun was ground based. The engine stopped dead in flight and he was able to put in down just outsie a firebase. No damage? I guess not. If a bear s....never mind.

Suffice it to say if you write the program you can write it any way you want and realism is what your mind makes of it.

This is a game after all, why get too realistic?
