Picking up downed pilots?
« on: March 21, 2005, 09:16:38 AM »
Would it be possible to add the ability to pick up downed pilots? I know not many players would do this on a routine basis… It would probably be used by the same group that is willing to fly vehicle supplies in a C-47.

I don’t see the need for any new aircraft for this feature. Just use the ones that other players can already join as gunners. Perhaps I am being simplistic, but what would be required other than enabling the ability to join another players plane (that is at a complete stop and within a VERY limited range) after a successful bailing out?… Right now you can only join another players plane from the tower.

I would be willing to pick up somebody behind lines in a goon. I also think rescuing a downed countryman during a CV attack by sneaking in with a Kate would be a hoot.
Anything that adds to the team play atmosphere would be good.

I wonder what it'd take to impliment it, but it'd be cool...

kinda 'Vietnamish' ...

wonder if the pick up could be like the seals being picked up on a rubber dingy..
hold the loop out & we grab it as th eC47 drives by..."YANK!!" ...:aok

SAR rules :)

We could ask for special aircraft for it though. Just think of the Catalina! Or J2F Duck?

It has been suggested, asked and begged for a million times now, but we can keep on dreaming can't we :)

Ask yourself a different questions. How long would you wish to wait around doing not much of anything to wait for someone to pick you up.

Yep, that was the biggest counter-argument given and is a very logical and reasonable one.
Though sometimes an SAR aircraft happens to be nearby and decides to drop you a visit :)

And...when you have like 10+ kills or something, it would be awsome to still being able to land them. (This would be especially important in the MA)

And I could organize some awsome missions with them in the H2H!

Very hard to land a plane after it has been shot down.

There's just no rationale for it.  It could be a neat feature for use in limited-lives special events, but in the MA the novelty would wear off in 3 seconds, because only the most ridiculous score potatos would be willing to wait to be picked up so that they could get a "bailed successfully" instead of a "captured" on their record.

ok ok it's monday...but there's no reason for sarcasm...

Well how I see it, a downed pilot (with the kills) is picked up by the (let's say) Catalina. If the Catalina lands safely at home-base, the rescued pilot still gets it's kills!

Oh and don't think this is a suggestion, I'm just talking about it. (I'm not expecting anything from it :) )

I suppose I would wait around for awhile if a squaddie was on the way... Would it be any different than sitting in a disabled tank waiting for help?

I've flown a C-47 with vehicle supplies more than a sector to help someone who asked. So I'm not of the Run&Gun mentality.

HEY! it would also give some of these guys something to do with thier second accounts :)

You're right Goaly, there are more than enough people willing to wait a little while for well-deserved help. (How else should we distribute the vehicle supplies anyway? it's the same with being rescued :) )

Okay, you could'nt land a plane after it has been shot down.

But I'm sure there have been pilots who recieved credit for the kills they made before they were forced to bail.

So a certain pilot is gonna wait for maybe 1 hour doing nothing, and wait for someone to pick him up just to save his kills, when in fact if he just returns to the tower and ups a new plane he could probably get more kills?

It just isn't a practical idea.

It has its purpose especially in scenarios.  It would be a reasonable addition if it did not take much work.  For example, we already have join..  If it would work for a bailed out pilot within 500 yards of a m3 or c47 you have your rescue.  HT, I think you underestimate the number of people who would do something just because.  Not all are Quake monkeys.
