Affray
It is an affray if you use or threaten violence to somebody else in such a way that a person of reasonable firmness would fear for his or her personal safety.

Street fighting, with or without weapons or missiles, is an affray. It can be tried in the Crown Court or the Magistrates' Court. The maximum penalty is three years' imprisonment.

Historical Definition:
affray \uh-FRAY\, noun:
A tumultuous assault or quarrel; a brawl.

Mounted encounters by armored knights locked in desperate hand-to-hand combat, stabbing and wrestling in tavern brawls, deceits and brutalities in street affrays, balletic homicide on the dueling field--these were the martial arts of Renaissance Europe.
--Sydney Anglo, The Martial Arts of Renaissance Europe

An Irish soldier was stabbed with a boar spear by a German mercenary in 1544 during an affray that followed Henry VIII's capture of Boulogne.
--James Williams, "Hunting, hawking and the early Tudor gentleman," History Today, August 2003

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Affray comes from Old French esfrei, from esfreer, "to disquiet, to frighten."

Couldn't help but think of the roving gangs of Grannies menacing fit young punks skit from Monty Python.  Obviously the teachers need to unite in a similar fashion.

Ah well, the price of living in our modern society is to be willing to sacrifice one's tool shed for the sake of the greater good. We must be willing to go that extra mile, to have the bars put on our windows, and to be willing to cooperate with criminals and give them what they want, with the firm conviction that after we have been raped, burgled, or assaulted, there is a slight possibility the perp might eventually be found, convicted, and sentenced to up to several months in an overcrowded detention center and that they will be taught a lesson other than those involving honing their criminal skills.

Additionally we can avail ourselves of the countless "Teachers who have lost Toolsheds" therapy groups and feel better about the situation by meeting with other victims to drink bad coffee and complain about the need for more legislation that will somehow get the police to lock up the young punks before they vandalize our toolsheds or maybe we can get them to ban rocks, spraypaint, and testosterone?

Well in any event, all of this is a small price to pay in order to be able to continue to feel superior and protect our children from harmful exposure to to religion, values, discipline, and outmoded concepts like right and wrong, good and evil and so on. They'll be far happier living wild as nature intended them to, roaming free, hunting in packs, breeding whenever they are in heat and killing off the weak and elderly... or is that wolves? I've forgotten.

Well luv, I hope you've learned your lesson. They'd never have trashed your shed if you'd been a member of "Hells Grannies".

"We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion... Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." - John Adams

Affray is what my cousin was prosecuted for. Got 4 months.

A suspended sentence would have been justice in my mind. Her actions were way over the top, mind.

Just goes to show that there is NO justice anywhere...and I thought we were the only place where criminals have more rights than those on the side of good....There is no hope for this world.

There is no hope for the world because of shows like The OC and Dawson's Creek. The writing has been on the wall for some time.

Airguns have been reclassified as firearms in the UK since a 2 year old child was killed with a pellet through the eye this year. I wonder what happens when all tools are banned in the UK and its a 48 year old woman vs a gang of teenagers with her bare hands

Not true. Airguns have been classified as firearms in the UK for decades - all statistics for gun crime includes crime involving air weapons.

If you look around on British news sites, this kind of teenage gang harrassment of it's citizens is quit common.

And in America, black wannabe-white, former singer, bankrupt paedophiles prey on rich or seriously ill kids and you are more likely to be mowed down in the classroom than in the street.

But that's the media, huh?

What I find really funny, is the way the Americans on this board assume British people have suddenly been disarmed in the last 15 years. Check this little fact out - the British populace hasn't been armed for a century or more. Perhaps then you will understand things a little more instead or dragging out the same tired rhetoric.

JUST OFF THE WIRE LONDON!!!!!!!

10,000 grannys hearing of the plight of the former school teacher Linda Walker converged on her home to deal justice to the gang of youths who terrorised her and her sons. Witnesses said one moment the gang stood in front of the army of granny's and told them to "piss of you ol'toshes". The next moment they dissappered under the knitting needles, garden sheers, bumbershoots and boots of 10,000 angry seniors. Scotland Yard could find no remains of the youths larger than a tuppence and is asking if witnesses could help them to identify and bring to justice these out control elderly women. Rumor has it the locals answered the Yard by saying "What elderly women?".

People can use objects as weapons, such as a bat, knife or gun, and almost any level of violence against a burglar could be acceptable in the right situation, Ken Macdonald, QC, the Director of Public Prosecutions, said.

My biggest question is do these criminals turned victims get prosecuted for their crimes in wich they were committing while they were "victimized"?

The "criminals" in this case were standing on the road near her son's car, which was not damaged in this instance. She claimed they poured some water over the car. That's the extent of their "crime".

What happened is she lost her temper over various earlier events, and took it out on some young men who happened to be in the right place at the right time.

As the judge said:

"You assumed these individuals were likely to be the same individuals who had caused the vandalism to your property."

There's no evidence that the people she threatened with what appeared to be a handgun had done anything wrong at all.

Mr Macdonald said that the CPS had brought only 11 prosecutions against householders in 15 years, including one in which a burglar was tied up, thrown into a pit and set alight.

Anyone here ever been the target of harassment and repeated vandalism by teenage males? If it goes on for a period of time,  they find ways to let only you know they did it. Feeds that sadistic mean streak many young males have. Then they stand around and watch the show like innocent angels.

This article left alot out from Linda Walkers side of the issue other than making her look like a madwoman. But then that image works better than letting victemised people think they can seek some kind of justice when it feels to them the local constabulary doesn't care. The reporter never inquired how was she sure the group of youths was her group of vandals. Obviously they were getting her goat so to say. Probably getting good reactions from her sons. What a pair of cowards. They probably know who the group is also.

Based on her background, I doubt this woman was other than a solid citizen being purposly harrased by a group of sadistic little monsters. She cracked, goes to jail and they are doubely emboldend to find new victems. And just wait for her happy home coming.

She made two mistakes. One was to ring the police and tell them what she was going to do and then going after them when they were well away from her house. If she's simply zapped them in the garden there would have been less consequences. Still the law is an bellybutton in this situation. There is no way she should have got a custodial sentence. Stupid.
