I like this idea.

I also like the idea of Jackal holding me tightly while we all sit around a camp fire singing coumbaya.

Just FYI, Dipper has been playing for .. hmm, I guess it's been over a year now... :) He's changed his game id a couple of times though.

Umm, what was the discussion about now? I like the CT, I've had some good fights most of the times, so it's not anything like flying offline. But this wasn't a CT vs MA thread, was this? ;)

If you want relaxed realism go somewhere else. It is available in many places other than HT. Otherwise take the time and LEARN to fly.

i think you just went "somewhere else ;)

AH is the iconic example of relaxed realism.

  maybe TOD will change that.

FR v RR has been done. There was a following of arcade types who didn't want to bother with actually learning tactics or really learning what it is to fly a flight sim air combat game and they had a lot of fun with it. There was also the following of FR types who took great satisfaction with learning tactics and flight skills. They also had a lot of fun with that. Unfortunately, needed changes never really came about. Hence the reponse you hear, "two weeks" to the whine, "when are we gonna see change to this game". The game changed hands a few times until it's final owners decided to discontinue its online arenas.

From a community stand point, in those day, the FR guys held the RR guys in disdain as they were merely going through the motions of fighting. The RR guys thought they were doing great! However, it became common place for FR guys drop in to RR arena to shoot up everyone. It was easy to do because the RR guys lacked any real skills other than pulling 20G's in a loop fight. For the most part the RR guys who were having a great tiime without having to work at it didn't mind too much and FR guys pretty much left the RR guys alone except for the occasional sortie to "club some baby seals".

Enter AH and it's pretty close to the FR those older vets were used to.  Those RR guys that had no place to go eventually moved over to AH and learned fly and fight. Pesonally I think these guys have made a great transition to FR and actually enjoy themselves in the game. Also, the owners continuosly make improvements to the game. That's a good thing.

Perhaps the question of RR occasionally arises because some of the old guys who flew RR are just finding AH now and would like to see it like the old days of the other game. Maybe that's what TOD is going to be about? Just about anyone can up and fly a bomber without too much effort and even get hits on the target. Hmmm, not bad! If you all remember the bombing went back to the old way of setting up the nordon. Realism be damned in favor of what the masses want. But maybe its realism be damned in favor of what brings more people into the game? For instance, if you neuter the .50's didn't you just help the newby bomber pilots get to the target much easier and get kills that they would normally have had to work for? Hey, its pure economics so hang in there and you may see RR once again in the TOD. If it wasn't economics we wouldn't be flying here. Which would you prefer?

The real question might be asked, "what happens to the MA when the TOD goes online?" Do all the FR guys lose it or maybe the CT has been left to decay because it's the arena that gets the axe? WHo knows?

i for one enjoy RR, i loved AW RR.  it was easy, it was fun and didnt take much to have fun.  come home, log on and was having fun.  yes, ive come around to FR in AH, sure ive learned a few things, but  if there was a decent sim out there with RR, i would prolly do it.  as it stands right now tho, AH is in fact the best thing going, FR or RR, dont matter.  dont get me wrong, i still have in funAH, otherwise i wouldnt be here.  the RR thing was just better for my enjoyment, and isnt that after all, why we play? enjoyment?

Any problem of the MA must be dealt in a way which sets a new standard where everyone could reach a compromising point and be more or less content to play in it. The arena should stand as one. Any kind of "solution" that rips people apart and divides groups to form separate arenas, is highly unrecommended.

IMO, separation of arenas means that AH has failed to come up with a compromising point that effectively deals with different types of players on a mutual basis.

IMO, it also means that AH has failed to integrate the huge numbers into a single gameplay format, and thus has no choice but to go the "reverse" course and bring back the "Smallville" days of AH.

Essentially, it means that since AH cannot come up with a real "Massive Multiplayer" game format featuring 500~600 people in a single arena, it will just revert to the old days of small arenas by making 3 small servers with 200 people max --- man, that's just really sad thing to think about.

ps) The DA, TA and SEA is a special type of arena suited for limited purposes, and the CT is more of a small scale 'experimental' arena(which unfortunately seems to be failing)

ps2) The ToD might be fundamentally different, but we'll have to see about that.

There's a chance that the introduction of ToD would in effect, become something like "Arcade arena" and "Sim arena". It's pretty hard to imagine how the numbers might shift around, but if the new ToD becomes a huge success, the ToD might very well become the "main theme" of AH.

But at any rate, ToD and MA is more than just 'sim' and 'arcade' distinction. It wasn't meant to be a solution for the MA problem - it's a totally original project which HT and co. have been thinking for a long time, IIRC.
