Aces High Question.
« on: April 01, 2005, 07:56:46 AM »
This morning I DLed Warbirds 2004. Just to check it out. I havent checked out warbirds since 2.7 or somthing. Anyhows good news Aces High is a far better game. My question is really one about static directional stability than anything esle. I noticed in AH when we lose our vertical stab your aircraft yaws to the left or to the right...based on a number of facters, but thats not the point. You aircraft yaws hard untill you break into a stall and lose control of the aircraft.
This morning I was flying the warbirds B-25H, I got attacked by a 109 who quicky took out my vertical stabs. The aircraft bucked alittle bit to the left then settled in. I didnt notice much diffrence in flight. Infact it felt as if I had only lost my rudder. Now I am pretty sure there game is cartoonish, so I am not surprised by this. But what formula does HTC use to decide how hard or which way a aircraft missing it's vert stab is going to go?
No real reasion to ask, I am just wondering. There have been times when I have lost my stab and havent noticed it right from the start, only to have the aircraft slowly yaw one way then break into a stall.
I ask because sometime back we were talking about sim pilots having a hard time keeping there eyes out of the cockpit when flying a real plane. But I think this might be an area where the sim might be helpful. When I am flying my P-51 in AH and I lose half wing my reaction isnt one of thinking "what just happend?" It is one of responce to the change in aircraft control. I go hard right or left, ease back on the stick and try to get two notches of flaps under me to help with the lift problem. At the same time I am working the rudder to bring the nose back around.
Now I am not sure if this is the correct course of action, but it works for me every time. I only lose around 300feet or so in alt.
So I wonder. Would this work in real life? Would my responces save me if I were to ever collide with another aircraft badly damaging that wing so bad most of my lift on that side was gone? Just silly questions..Becuase I lose alot of wing tips, I tend to be a very aggressive fighter pilot, I have collided with a few bombers/fighters and I just wanted to know.

I've seen pics of some pretty messed up fighters that landed, so I guess anything is possible.

I'd bet you'd be correct about reaction time and reflexive measures.  In a parellel situation involving a different kind of sim it helped me.  I once ended up spun around backwards doing 70ish MPH, because some bonehead ran a stop sign on a rural highway.  I just went in automatic mode when I started spinning, and made the car do exactly what I needed it to do.  Afterwards I realized I was so calm and confident because of spinning hundreds of times in NASCAR Racing.  Not sure I'd have known how to stay out of the guardrails/utility poles in that situation without simming.
