Well when I fly the pony I just take all six guns. Its a great bird and I engage whenever I can unless it's utterly suicide. The pony is really a great bird. I wonder why so few people fly it? I do hope we get a P-51B also.

BadDawg...

I know of one other guy that flies with the 4x .50 option. But I think he uses the tracers.

It is Bane with the 13th TAS

Don't fly P51 much or rather at all anymore since I really don't like Allied iron.
But the times I flew it I used 4 guns and it performs great with it, great roll and manuverability.

I'm not taking a 4 gun Pony out until we get one in Olive Drab livery, with a Malcom hood.

For those of you who don't know what I'm referring to...P-51B!

Baddawg, realize that I'm not the dedicated Pony driver I use to be (drive the Yak more now, but Pony second).

But I just haven't noticed that much performance increase from taking the 4 gun option, and I definitely notice the reduced firepower.

Just hasn't seemed worth it to me.

Love the 4gun pony.  Uber-sweet

Verm the firepower isn't really that much different if ya saddle up and hit'em at convergence like ya s'pose to

"Wassamatter with me am I sick?"

In a word:  Yes.

But seriously, we're just now starting to fly the Pony a little bit.

In SDOE, a lot of people avoided it like the plague.  They were always stalling out at low speeds in the corners, and flopping to the ground.

I'm starting to feel like the '51 in AH is kind of the same...a great bird if you treat the stick like it's made of glass.

BD, would appreciate any further feedback if you really think you feel like you're gaining a performance advantage, whether it be just more speed, or a mix of speed and agility.

Good to hear from you.

I love the 4 gun pony, though I use tracers.  Buff hunting is tough though

I don't know that I can tell a difference in handling a 4-gun 51 vs. a 6-gun 51. I may have to try it more, I guess. I do know that even losing one gun to damage seems to impact lethality.

I think the AH 51 handles quite nicely, even in the turns. I don't notice much of a tendency to spin, rather it just gets sluggish as you slow down.

2 less guns only will mean less weight. So it should give you a minor increase in roll, climb, acceleration, turn (becasue of lower wing-loading).

As the pony is not a good climber or turner, accelerator, i never let it get into situations where i have to rely on those qaulities (as they are its weaknesses), the minor advantage afforded by 2 less guns is not great enough to me to warrent the lesser fire-power.

But i will have to put up with it when we get Mr MkIII

I fly with Baddawg (Dogftr) a lot, so I'm well qualified to comment.

You know how really small children place a blanket over their head and are convinced they're totally hidden?  That's Dogftr with no tracers!  He believes he's invisible with the tracers off.  Hell, he even shouts "BOO" over RW after a successful sneak.

All of the AKs play along with him and shout back and forth "have you seen dogftr" even when he's right in the middle of us.  It seems to please him. lol

You know, when you said you used the 4-gun pony, I thought I outta try it out.  But, I cannot detect any significant improvement in the handling of the aircraft.  It is just a *pinch* faster.

The main point to make here is this: with the 4 guns, you arent going to be able to outturn any planes you would with a 6-gun.  Maybe it rolls a bit better, or corners a bit better - but nothing that makes me wanna give up 2 guns.

Plus, the ammo loadout is virtually identical, so you dont save any weight.

What about the P-38 light 4 guns, now that is something that I think performs markedly better (1200 less 50cal rounds)!
