My new toy.
« on: April 03, 2005, 01:49:50 AM »

And so I give in to the Dark Side.

Should be here this week.  I finally gave in to the cowboy shooting bug.  2 of these babies, a big jug of Pyrodex, and lots of lead going to be shredding some paper targets next weekend lol.

Ahhhh, I do love the smell of black powder in the morning.  :)

Pyrodex will give you better results and less fouling. That could be important on a day where you may shoot over 30 rounds.

Since you are in a cap and ball shoot, they require you to clear all your chambers before you leave the firing lines don't they?
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

Should have been more specific.  Pyrodex is what I'm using.  Real black powder is almost impossible to get here.  I cant even order Pyrodex myself, only FFL holders can.

And yes, all chambers must be clear before leaving the line.  Even if we are shooting knock down targets and one blows down on its own or I hit two at once (unlikely, but possible), I still have to expend a round for that target.  Points are only judged for hits and time, so the only penalty for expending an extra round is the time involved.

went to the range friday to test some new rifle loads for the Garand..

There were like thousands of these people (men women and children) all dressed up like the 19th century and wearing sixguns and pushing around carts full of rifles and shotguns.   they were useing every range and every place you could possibly park was full of motorhomes.

constant gunfire... seems to be a very popular sport.

Lazs, if you've ever been in any type of speed shooting competition, its similar but more restrictive.

You can only use single action revolvers, lever action rifles shooting pistol caliber rounds, and shotguns designed before 1897 (which includes double barrel "coach" guns, either with or without external hammers), or pump action shotguns with an exposed hammer like the Winchester 1897 (most famous as a WWI trench gun).  You can also use lever action shotguns.

It is a blast.  Pardon the pun.  :)

Its not just black powder though, they use all sorts of modern rounds.  Black powder (Pyrodex) is just my choice.  Last competition I had to borrow guns to compete and the guy who loaned me his guns had the SWEETEST matched set of .38 Rugers.  Consecutive serial numbers even.  The trigger pull had been modified to be very light and with that heavy a frame the .38 had almost no kick at all.  Superbly easy to stay on target.  Rifle shot the same rounds, except he used flat nose bullets instead of standard rounds.  20 ga. double barrel with double hammers and 18in. barrels.  I couldnt miss with that setup.  Ok I missed one.  Got greedy and went for too much speed on the last round.

Here's one pic of me at the line, second pic is me and the guy I borrowed the guns off of.

Have you ever seen a picture of funked or pei?

Yeah.. I don't really like speed shooting sports much..  This looks like fun tho.   I have two '97's one a trench gun.

I have single action rugers but in 44 mag.   I have shot a couple of these cowboy action guns in .38 and in .45 and.... the loads these guys are shooting.... you can allmost outrun the bullet.  Int he old days guys were doing similar things to .45 autos... if you fired a real round through em they would destroy the gun because of the very light (down to 7 lb) return springs.

oh... I am glad to see that people in the peoples republic of hawaii do enjoy firearms tho.

We do.  :)  Most of the folks I run into believe (like me) that if you start educating kids early on how to properly handle and use guns, you reduce the chance of accidents, reduce the number of violent gun crimes, and increase the sense of responsibility they have as adults for their guns and for educating THEIR children after.  As a result, folks who DO own guns here tend to involve everyone in the family in their sports, even if only as spectators.

The group's website

If you check out the Gallery section, you will see plenty of variety in the folks that make up the group.

yep.. while cowboy shooting is not my thing I am very much in support of it.    I can't imagine all those little kids and moms all dressed up in western gear and eating BBQ and having a great time.... I can't imagine them voting for bans on firearms... I believe that the more people exposed to the fun and the safety aspect of any shooting sport the better.
