If you go for a socket 754 MB I'd go AGP...if you go for a socket 939 then PCI-E may make better sense.

I bought a DFI lanparty (754) late last year (3200+ chip) and couldnt be happier with choice. Basically I decided that I'm going to build out a new box in the next 18 months to 2 years (normal for me)....so it made no sense to buy an upgrade path...especially since there are no guarantee's on standards and SLI is game dependent for now...also 4 months ago PCI-E cards sold at a high premium (got AGP X-800pro).

Do a cost projection....thats what I did....being that the current AGP cards are plenty fast:

AGP card itself was $125 less than the PCIE equevalent

AGP Mobo was $100 less than the PCIE, and $150 less than the PCIE with all the bells and whistles.

Thats 200-250 more for the PCIE with no immediate benefit for me.  Since I can likely pick up that same PCIE mobo and Video card a year or so from now(if I were so inclined)  for less than $200-250...its a no brainer.

Do the math and see where you fall

Personally I just stepped up to an AMD64 3000+  939 pin and  a 9800 Pro 128. I have these on a Gigabyte Mobo...K8NS I believe.

I couldn't be happier....They all perform above my expectations and benchmark VERY well. If you're looking for a Motherboard look closely at the Gigabytes. , aztec

Just built a new system.  I reviewed everything I could and from what I have found out the PCI-e although a nice setup for the future offers no performance gains for the present time.

With that said....

I bought the Gigabyte 939 board listed below and wish to heck I bought the pci version of it as I would have saved almost a hundred dollars on my video card.

The X800 ati cards are alot cheaper if you have PCI express v. AGP.  No performance gains at this point but their was a cost savings...I have not however compared the cost of the two boards (I assume to be negligable) as I really didnt want to depress myself further.

well here's the mobo and cpu ive been looking at

Gigabyte "GA-k8ns"
nvidia nforce3 250
AMD sovket 754 socket
1xagp 8x/4, 5xpci slots
$73.00 U.S.

AMD Atholn 64 3400+512kl2 cache
2.4ghz
socket 754
$219.00 U.S.

tell me what you all think

i also researched a 939 pin system but will save 200 bucks or so  by buying the 754, but dont know if i should just bite the bullet and buy the 939, and save myself the trouble of needing another upgrade in another two years.

Actually would only save 100 bucks based on newegg pricing.

I prefer the 939 chip myself.  But again...price out the whole system, and then compare price to performance.

You might find that you save 100 bucks by going with the 754 chipset and the PCIe card rather than 939 and AGP like I did.

Cheers!

im gonna stay agp no matter wich way i go because my  agp video card is only 3 months old, and im not shelling out another 300 bucks for a new one yet, so its agp for me. so i think ill go with the 754 pin, and hope for the best.

Youll be very happy with that board.  I have been very happy with mine.

Cheers!

Give a holler if you need any help getting the board setup for gaming.

I was also looking at a PCIexpress, when I built my new System, ASUS 64Bit MoBo, AMD64 3000Mhz cpu, 1Gb of Ram, X800 Pro GC.

I noticed that no one has mentioned the fact that AMD MoBo's were Damm expensive compared to the Intel MoBo's...Another factor for me.

Why bother with a 754-pin? AMD eventually plans on relegating 754 to the value category, and using 939 as the mainstream. Plus, you can pick up an AGP 939 pin board. I did, as I just received an AGP vid card as a gift and wasn't about to throw it away.

I wound up doing a good bit of research on 939 AGP boards, and chose the nForce 3 Ultra board over VIA because.. well.. I'm sick of VIA. :)

Mobo (it's tricked out, should last a good long time. Also OC friendly):

CPU (If you get an Athlon64, be sure to get a Winchester core):

engine is right...socket 939 is the way to go. get a wincester core (or the new vience)

AGP/PCIexpress costs the same, i dont know where these guys are picking up 150 more for mb, and 150 more for the gfx? your crazy! infact some PCI-express cards are cheaper than AGP!!! i dont get it
