Whats a good memory testing/tuner?
« on: April 08, 2005, 09:12:22 AM »
Machine is acting a bit flakey with random application crashes and reboots.  One option is something messed up with the gig of ram. Anyone know of a good utility to test ram on a machine?  Anything good for tweaking ram for performance?

Memtest86 is good. When my PC has behaved like that in the past, its always been down to too much heat so it might be worth checking out fans, heatsinks.

Tweaking ram needs to be done via the bios, uping voltages, latency timings etc. AFAIK the only way to do that is by actually going into the bios and doing it by hand.

Take a look at the capacitors on your motherboard, make sure that the tops of them are perfectly flat and not bulged. I had problems like you describe a little over a year ago. The capacitors on my mb were bulged and some of them were leaking a brownish/reddish substance.
