Low Frame Rates
« on: April 10, 2005, 06:24:16 PM »
I have been playing Ah2 on my new A64 PC for the past 4 months, but i can't get my frame rates up to a decent number.

I have what i think is a decent mid-high end system:

A64 skt 939 3000+ (1.8Ghz) Winchester core (which i can overclock to 3800+ 2.5Ghz)
1G Dual channel Mem (512M x 2)
BFG 6800 Vid card

The game plays pretty smooth, but when i am in a furball over a base with burning hangers and 10 or more planes sometimes my frames drop to low 20's and i get 1 second lags.

If i am in the tower at a base that has hangers on fire i get about a 30-40 fps.

The only time i get high fps (60-80), is when i am up high >8K above ground and only a couple planes around.

My rig scores very high in all benchmarks (3dmark05-4380, 1M superpie 34sec) and is stable and fast in all other games and apps but AH2.

I use FSautostart to turn off all uneccessary background processes and it makes no diff. I have tried it with AGP fastwrites disabled and enabled in the bios and makes no differance.

I here everyone one else saying they are getting 70+ framerates, what the heck am i doing wrong.

I was using 1024 textures, but just tried 512 and made no diff.

I have set graphics details sliders to more performance (far right) and don't notice any differance.

Like i said the game is playable, but when i am in a fight over a base with hangers on fire i get 20-30fps and 1 sec lags mabe twice every minute. Is this normal for a high end system, or am i missing a setting somewhere?

I have my 6800 set for 1024x768 resolution, no aa/af, Vsync=on, but i tried it off and no diff, i have also tried the 6800 set on quality and performance, makes very little differance.

I preload all textures and skins to Memory.

Any comments would be welcome!!

More than likely its in your desktop video settings.  You probably have Vsync on, or you'd be showing much higher fps.  Thats fine, it needs to be on.

Right click on your desktop and go to Properties -> Settings -> Advanced.  At the top right should be your video adapter but along the bottom towards the right you should see Monitor.  Click that tab, and set your refresh rate to the highest rate shown for your monitor.  For most, thats 85.  Unless you have an older monitor, it might be 75.  Anyway, select the highest number it shows for your given screen resolution.  I run 1024x768 res. and 85hz refresh.  Now go to your video card settings tab, it should say something like Geforce 6800.  The main menu will pop up out to the left.  Go to the Performance settings.  The biggest two to look at are Anti Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering.  Make sure AA is set no higher than 4x, and AF is either off or set to Application Preference (which is off in AH).  Image settings should be at High Performance, and Vsync should be on.  The rest I would leave as they are until you can read up on how the settings work and decide for yourself how you want them.

Go down to AGP settings and make sure AGP 8x is enabled.  If Fast Writes are enabled, and your system is stable, you can leave them on.  Mine are.  If they are off, you can try enabling them, but if you start experiencing lockups or crashes, disable it again.

Go down to Temperature Settings and make sure the check box for Enable Heat Indicator Warning is checked (enabled).  This will warn you if the card ever starts to get too hot and give you time to shut down.  Click on Apply, and then OK until you are back to the desktop.

Start AH.  Go to your video settings.  Set your max textures to 512.  Unless you are running high resolutions on your monitor, you will never notice the difference between 512 and 1024, and it may make the difference in speed if you are swapping out textures because your video card's memory is overloaded.

Start up AH and play with your ingame settings until you are comfortable with your fps.  You should be able to max out your sliders under most circumstances, although I leave mine at about 75% - 80% of the way to the left.  Animated water is up to you, the 6800 should handle it with no problems.  Some people say it throws off their depth perception, some people like it.  It shouldnt cost you much frame rate, so try it out and make your own decision.

Good luck!

Oh, and btw, you really only need to post about the first 1/3 or so of that Diagnostic report.  The rest has little or no bearing on game performance.

Thanks StarOfAfrica2,

I all ready have all the settings you mentioned, but still can't seem to get good FPS, this is driving me crazy, LOL!!!!  When i OC my cpu to 2.5Ghz it runs as fast as a Athlon FX53 and i still have below average fps with AH2 when i run my CPU at stock speeds or OC it.

I get great numbers in all benchmarks and this is the only app or game that gives me problems. I don't think i should be getting 30-40 FPS while in the tower looking out the window at a burning hanger?  And if i take off or fly over a base with burning hangers, and there are more then a handful of planes around, my fps are 20-30fps and this is when i get the 1 second lags, not constant but averages maybe 2 lags per minute that are .5 to 1 second in duration.  If i was running 1200x1600 with aa/af set to 8x i would understand, but i have aa/af set off and only running 1024x768.

I am set at 1024x768 @ 85Hz.

I have both aa and af set to off, Vsync on, Tried both High perfermance and quality mode srttings on the 6800.

AGP 8x, tried fast writes enabled and disabled (no differance).

I was running 1024 textures, but have set them to 512 two days ago, preload textures and skins to mem.

I actually moved all my sliders in the AH2 app to the right (performance, and still get the low FPS's, so i just leave them at default now.  I don't use animated water, like the color but throws my depth perception off also.

My 6800 scores 4380 in 3Dmark05 which is high for a 6800, most only score in the 3500-3800 range, but i OC the GPU and have softmoded it to use all 16 pipes and 6 vertex shaders.    And  yes, i also tried AH2 without OCing my 6800 and with the original 12 pipes and 5 vertex shaders (no RivaTuner softmod).

I also read a thread about the DX sound hardware acceleratin setting (i use winXPsp2) so i tried moving the DX sound acceleration slider 1 and 2 settings to the left  and it makes no differance.

Its your sound, onboard sound gives you stutter and framerate drop. I would think that it skips sound sometimes too?

You need a good soundcard, i was using on board sound and had the same trouble. I wont reccommend any soundcard since i dont know if all work well with the via chipset.

Thanks Schutt,

Maybe the onboard sound is causing the pblm, my mobo is an Abit AV8 (skt 939 Via chipset with onboard AC97 sound).

Can anyone make a recomendation on what PCI sound card i can buy that will work with the Via chipset on this mobo.  I am only using 2 stereo speakers now, but i may purchase surround sound head phones in the near future so 5.1 support would be nice also.

Was having similar problems.  Had onboard sound, network, ?game controler?.

Disbaled all of em and replaced with cards where needed.  Now getting much better FPS.

Now getting good/much better everything.

Thanks Guys,

I disabled my onboard sound and put a cheap SB Live 24bit 5.1 card in ($29) and i can notice the differance.  Now for the first time i can be in the tower looking at a base and see 70-85 FPS for light action bases, even bases that have all hangers on fire and lots of planes i am getting 40-55 fps.  I only dropp under 35fps in really heavy furball base attacks (20-35 planes, all hangers on fire, lots of GV's out,) and then only breifly and it would try to stay above 35-40 fps.  I would say i am probably averaging 10-20 fps higher across the range of all types of scenerios.

I am running winXPsp2 and the OS did not find the drivers for the card (even over the web), so i had to have the os look for them on the included driver CD that came with the card.  Several people said these drivers were reseource hogs and you get better cpu fps by letting the os run the windows drivers for this card.

1.  Does anyone know where i can get the XPsp2  basic windows drivers for this?

2.  The game feels more comfortable now and plays alot smother for me, still which i could squeeze another 10-15 FPS in heavy base attack furballs.  Do you guys think if i would have spent $65 for the Audigy 2 Value or $95 for the Audigy 2ZS i would get the additional 10-15 fps i still am looking for.  I am only using a basic 2 stereo speaker setup (not even a subwolfer), i do not use 5.1 surround sound so i did not think the more expensive cards would add much improvement, but maybe i am wrong.  If i could stay above 50FPS in the worst furballs i would be really happy (curently i dip to 35fps ocassionally in the worst conditions, but only briefly, and it tries to stay above 40)

3. My mobo also has the Gig Ethernet lan port built on, but i am only running it at 10M ethernet speeds for connection to my DSL modem.  Do you guys think that i could get some more fps by disabling the onboard gig port and using a PCI ethernet card?

Thanks again for the help, things are getting better, and the smother game play i am getting now is helping me track and shoot bogies better.

Anything onboard (part of the motherboard) is going to use valuable CPU cycles IMHO.  Skuzzy could probably tell you for sure.

I have everything not absolutely required onboard turned off.  EVERYTHING!

Go to this site right here  http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Sound_Blaster_Live_Driver_for_Windows_2000XP/950927801/1

When the page loads, look down on the left side where it says "Note:You must have previous LiveDrvPack.exe (SBLW-XPWEB-W3-US) installed ", click on the "LiveDrvPack.exe" link and it will download the older file you must have for the autoupdater to work.  Since this page is also the update, after you download and install the original then just bring the website back up and download the update.

Good luck!
