distribution of a H2N2 influenza virus.
« on: April 13, 2005, 04:48:38 AM »
born after 1968? then maybe this news for you:

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) informed WHO on 26 March that an
influenza A/H2N2 virus was identified by a local laboratory in Canada. The H2N2
virus identified was found to be similar to H2N2 viruses that circulated in humans
in 1957-58 at the beginning of the so-called Asian influenza pandemic. The H2N2
virus which circulated at this time was fully transmissible among humans. It continued
to circulate in humans and cause annual epidemics until 1968, when it vanished
after the emergence of influenza A/H3N2 viruses that caused the next pandemic.
Therefore, persons born after 1968 are expected to have no or only limited immunity
to H2N2. H2N2 virus is not contained in current trivalent influenza vaccines.

read the rest here.

i really wonder how can this happen? spreading such a virus around the globe,
imagine terrorists get hands on such a virus :/

Terrorist would have little use for it, except to annoy people.
Let alone it would eventually also annoy the terrorists :D
Of course weak persons are in danger, like with any of the yearly influences.

As I understand, it is just an older type of a flu virus, which is today replaced by mutations of the same virus.
Of course it wouldn't be a pleasant one, but as far as I understand it doesn't kill people with normal health.

well on the local radio station here they said different things, they
called this virus "deadly". Why else would the WHO recommending that
all samples of the proficiency testing panel from CAP and any other
proficiency testing providers containing H2N2 and any derivates be
destroyed immediately.

Everyone is of course worried about Muslim Terrorists using the virus against the West, however their chances of being able to "weaponize" it and spread it effectively are very low. The best method of spreading it would probably be to infect "martyrs" and then pay them to travel to western cities.

The fact is though, that if another pandemic was unleashed that, as was the case with the original outbreak the third world would be far more severely hit than the west. In the end they would kill more Muslims that Americans. But then again, logic and consequences aren't exactly a terrorists strongest suit.
