Hoping when HT eventually gets round to the Spits remodel we might see both a clipped wing Spit VIII and a 4x20mm Spit V.
Where do we send the bribes :0
In fact something over the Spit XIV would be nice, then unperk the XIV.

Clipped wing LFXVIe and a regular span wing LFVIII would be my preference.  The RAAF, CBI and Med VIIIs get covered, and the XVIe looks just like an LFIXe so we've got D-Day til the end covered too :)

SpitV is already porked with +16 boost :P

It's probably FASTER than the clipped wing version was. In AH2 at any rate, SpitV/IX are almost identical in top speed on the deck (and that's the only place the clipped wing would fly -- the clipped wing suffered at even mid alts and was kept to mid-to-low alts)

Not really porked, we just got the Spit V with the maximum boost allowed.
Makes up for the worst Spit IX ever made that we have.

Have to distinguish between two things -
1) Lots of Mk's got clipped wings to improve roll rate.
2) That doesn't mean mid alt suffered, depended on whether the engine was an LF or not. E.g. a clipped wing LF would be better low alts.

Dan can explain it better.
I know there were 3 basic engine variants LF, standard and HF, each suitable for different altitude bands. This was irrespective of clipped wings.

It's not the engine.. The loss of a lot of wing area meant the higher up you went the less dense the air and the poorer the performance you had because you now had less lift for any given manuver. The loss of wing area and the resulting higher wing loading meant that, regardless of engine, they were limited to mid-to-low alts. I've read comments about this in at least a few books.

Didn't mean to imply that clipped wing Spits flew high alt, was just trying to explain the difference that the engine type made, and that that was what designated the LF,F,HF tag.
I used to be under the impression also that all clipped wing Spits were LFs and vice versa, but was shown why I was wrong.

Main reason for clipping the wings was to improve the roll rate, thats why I'd like to see a clipped wing Spit VIII to deal with the D9's.

Kev's right.  You could find an HF IX with clipped wings, or standard wings, not always the pointe tips.  Plenty of photos of Spit VIIs with regular tips and they were purely designed as a high alt version and came with lengthened wings to start.  Changing wingtip configuration was simple and often done at the squadron level.

The LF, F, HF designation was purely for the engine.  It had nothing to do with wing tips.
