Nutrition and The China Study

The title and subtitle say it all:

The China Study by T. Colin Campbell (BenBella Books, 2005)

The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health.

On P. 243 is a fascinating chart called Eat All You Want (While Getting Lots of Variety) of Any Whole, Unrefined Plant-Based Food.

He basically asserts many diseases can be prevented, alleviated, or reduced by following a plant-based diet and eliminating most animal-based food.

He includes a couple charts showing that the third leading cause of death in the United States in 2000 was Medical Care (!), with 225,400 people dying from the following: medication errors (7,400), unnecessary surgery (12,000), other preventable errors in hospitals (20,000), hospital borne infections (80,000), and adverse drug effects (106,000).

I checked a copy out from the library to read it.  Now I'm going to buy a copy.  Fascinating insights into a 40-year career including high levels of government and professional intricacies.

Vegetarians are healthier, but they dont live longer than people who eat meat.

Heres things to watch out with when eating lots of plant foods:

Whole grains deplete the bodies calcium and magnesium stores.  Its important to take suppliments if you eat lots of whole grains.

Some plants contain chemicals that bind with minerals.  Again, its important to take a multi-mineral suppliment.

Too much omega-6 fatty acids and a lack of vitamin B-12 on a vegetarian diet.

The only proven way to live longer is to eat less.  Foods that cause high insulin levels make you age faster.

man should eat meats and lots of it, it's the prime reason we're on top of the food chain and not still in the jungle.

come summer i get close to devouring 2-3 sirlion strips a week, simple luv it and will never give that up regardless.

that said i try to always buy from organic farmers, it's what they inject and feed cows these days, that is the problem. cow by-products aren't even considered to be organic anymore.

eat lots of veggie and when you die your children could mix your ashes with water and used it as pesticide.

would be interesting to see a survey on cubans, they've been doing organics for decades and have raised the ladder on sustained farmering in regards to it.

organics is the way to go, support your local farmer.

It is my theory that as man evolved in the Great Rift Valley, as Dr. Leaky’s digging suggests, we ate a diet of mostly vegetable material.

Picking something off a tree or digging up a tuber is a lot easier than killing and butchering a wildebeest. During the butchering process, lions and hyenas would have taken much of the booty. As meat would go bad in a day or two, a hunt would only get as much meat as the party could carry back to the tribe.

Whenever hunting was successful, probably the tribe feasted, but on the days in between… rutabagas, apples and grubs* were a lot easier to get.

This should be backed up by the latest performance theory on diet for a marathon runner or any other endurance athlete which stresses more carbo than it stresses protein.

I think we evolved on a hunter gatherer diet, and probably much more gatherer than hunter.

*grubs ain't vegetable, but I can't call 'em meat either

single malt and blended are still both in the grain group, so you have to chase it with some wine to get a fruit group.

Since we all spend only a limited time down here I choose to enjoy doing it.

Good food is an essential part of that and I enjoy nothing more than a good medium beef steak.

Vegetarians live 'longer' because the way they live thier lives sure makes it feel ten times longer.

I prefer to live a shorter but richer life instead of a long and dull one.

I'd like to see The China Study balanced by a similar study of mountain and desert people whose diets are mostly animal-based instead of plant-based.
