Ohio or West Virginia...sounds like a lose-lose situation to me.

Okay, yes, I have an idea about Ohio and West Virginia. My parents were born and raised there, and recently moved back to Huntington; I've spent some time.
My aunt lives across the river in Ohio.

If you're wondering, I'm in Europe now and my car is at my Aunt's in Ohio, not in WV.


I've also spent time in Ohio; I went to college outside of Cleveland.


So, from experience:

The Ohio river valley sucks, especially the part along West Virginia.
Here are some reasons NOT to settle there:

1) Of the 40 places in the US marked by the DEA as special enforcement regions, (high trafficking and usage) only two are rural. One of these is the Ohio valley along West Virginia.

2) Do you really want to live in a place with 40% unemployment? In one week I was there, there were more shots fired, people killed and high-speed chases than two years of my time in Iowa.

3) Car Insurance. Look it up.

4) Health Insurance. Even worse. See, the insurers are evil, but a rural "jury of peers" that's largely unemployed and has a natural bias against city slickers makes rates astronomical.

5) The food. The only decent fresh meat you can get is venison, and that's because the big supermarket chains haven't figured out how to charge for hunting yet. Forget decent vegetables of any sort (ain't nothin' grows up there).

6) The environment. Get a gander at the cancer rates from around there. Ashland Refinery, Nitro, and several other places pump out al kinds of goodness. Similarly, runoff from the coal fields makes the rivers purty. Recent pro-industry initiatives by the current administration have relaxed the absurdly overprotective environmental laws, so the rivers are getting darker again, and the floods more frequent.

7) The weather. Hot and extremely humid in the summer; winters are cold.

8) Airfare: check out flights to Charleston WV and Huntington.

9) Sports: Your professional teams will be the Reds and the Bengals. Ever wonder why college sports are so popular down there (Go Herd!)

10) Culture: Huntington, WV's biggest annual event is the international congress of Jehovah's Witnesses.


Louisville, I hear, is actually a nice town, but may be too far West for you.
In short, there's a reason why it's cheaper.

Hangtime,if you like to boat,and don't mind not being near a big city,buy some property or a house near Tygart Lake.It's about 5 miles from Grafton,which is located about 20 miles East of Clarksburg.

Beautiful lake,kinda like a miniature Lake Cumberland.

Nash,I was born and raised in WV.Not a big city place by any stretch of the imagination,but very pretty,and not a bad place to retire.

So dazzle me with your expertise of my home state.Tell me what is so bad about it.

WOW.

What crap.The only fresh meat you can get is venison?I've never eaten venison ONCE.

I've got news for you,WV has grocery stores that sell chicken,steak,and other assorted meats,just like any other state.Forget decent vegetables? Everytime we'd drive home from Tygart Lake,we'd stop at a farm and buy freshly picked sweet corn at a farm that was fantastic.It's amazing that people live in Colorado or Utah with their lack of farms.


The environment?Lets see a link to some recent stats,not those from the past,since many of the mines have been shut down.

Hot and humid in the summer,cold in the winter.
Fascinating....truly fascinating...

Sports-everyone I grew up with(who actually lives there)is either a Steeler fan,or a Pirates fan.

Yes college sports are popular,which is why most people are Mountaineer fans.The turds are wannabe's.:D

Normally I would jump at the opportunity to dazzle anyone with my expertise on West Virginia. But that would be callous... cold, even.

Because as we speak here tonight, there is a young woman who hails from West Virginia that makes our own small problems seem microscopic in comparison. Her name is Lynndie England.

She does not care if you live in West Virginia, or Ohio.

I will tell you something straight up. If any of us were a terrorist Iraqi maniac, and found ourselves incarcerated in abu gharib, we would be hella fortunate in getting beaten on by a specimen such as Lynndie England.

It's like.... free abuse! They should'nt be complaining - they should be thanking their lucky stars!

The one valid point is that unemployment and the economy in general tends to be pretty bad in this region.

Another subject of media abuse, Jessica Lynch, is also from WV.
Chuck Yeager is from WV.
Robert Byrd is from WV, and say waht you will about the beatiful and expensive freeway running from Charleston to Washington, he is a great politician.

Yeah, I've been to the Big Bear(Before they closed last year), and I've been to Kroger's, and I've been to Wal-Mart, and I've even been to a mom-and-pop market. And I'm sorry, The Ohio Valley isn't Cincy or Columbus. It's well-nigh impossible to find good meat in the stores. And if your notion of fresh vegetables begins and ends with Sweet Corn, well OK.

Ahh, the good stuff comes out!!

Was real concerned about the pollution, was aware of the mines... nothin new about poisioned water here in NY either. Havent drank anything that ain't been outta a bottle at the best for 40 years.

The weather concerns me the most.. I do hate exteremly high humidity; however since I won't be yachting or hiking and where my bellybutton gets parked there's an airconditioner in reach that's not the 'end all'. One of the reasons I was looking at the west slope of the appalacians or the great smokies was a lil more mild (less humid) weather than what's found down-slope in the mid-atlantic states or south-central ohio out thru the midwest. Only way I know of to beat the humidity here in the east is to freakin get up-slope in the mountains. The trick is to find a place without one of those 'slurry' or coal waste dams up slope, and to stay high enuff above the flood zones.. hate to have to swim in the rain.

My business is national, self contained and internet based.. employment rates ain't an issue; as long as there's a post office somehere nearby I can operate from anywhere. I'm picking up a 'toy hauler' type trailer; front half done like an 'RV' back half set up for field events I like to go to in the summer months... one to two week trips at the most; four or five of these a season. Draggin one of those offa Long Island thru the city is freakin hopeless...

This 'mobile' setup ain't to live in, I GOTTA have an 'FBO' to live in; won't tolerate living in a closet anymore (lived on the boat fer a year and a half; that wuz enuff). Was hoping to locate the FBO in a low cost of living locale.. would be nice if the the locale was a purdy one... and the hills of WV and SE Ohio are purdy.

Here on LI a decent 3 bedroom home is 250,000.00 and a 1 bedroom apartment averages about 1300.00 a month. That's just freakin nuts. Gettin around here is worse than southern california.. transiting thru NYC is a 4 hour nightmare to cover just 50 miles of road... and that's with EZ pass and no trailer.

A home in WV or Ohio is about 50-70,000, an apartment is about $600.00 a month...cuts my overhead by half (or more) and that's the diffrence between a decent life and a scramble for solvency.

Wasn't aware of the 'war' going on with the DEA.. was aware that most folks out there don't consider the federal government their friends.. can't say as I disagree with 'em, current situation in washington notwithstanding.

Keep the info commin guys.. really appreciate the feedback, both good and bad.
