Ohio or West Virginia.. which side of the river is better?

If you dont mind being close to suburbia, check out:

Morgan County
Berkely County
Jefferson County

The Three Counties of the Eastern Panhandle, By far the most wealthiest of West Virginia. A 90 Minute Drive from the Nations Capital. I used to live in Shepherdstown, the oldest town in West Virginia. Nice place to live, but the COL is greater than the Ohio River Valley for sure. It also has become a Yuppie Gathering Site for DC Commuters, Although its a college town too, Great Bars.

Anything West of the Blue Ridge, starts becoming very Rural, almost a different culture. When I want to go out and have a good time I have to go to Clarksburg,Bridgeport, Fairmont, Morgantown. And they pale in comparison, even to Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh PA being only 2 hours away from my location.

Where I live the closest coal mine is about 10 miles away, most Mines in Central West Virginia are closed, Coal is more prevalent to the Southern Counties, than where I live at.

The Weather is humid and Mild or Hot in the summer time, and ranges from Mild to Cold in the winter. Were a little bit to far South and in the Mountains to feel the effects of Lake Effect Snows. And Tornadoes in this area are almost non existant.

I'd say the worst part is West Virginia is the lack of culture. There is none. Its got great History, but dont expect much in the way of entertainment unless you like to gamble.

The people here are out of this world, but no different than any big city. Just depends on where your at, Eastern Panhandle, Northern Panhandle, Central and Southern West Virginians are all different.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

Dinger that's nice to know that much pollution was dumped into the air and water.Over 80 million pounds you say?

Just did a quick search on Colorado(I'm NOT knocking Colorado, always a beautiful state)In 2002 over 1,584,862 .lbs of air pollutants alone were dumped into Colorado's air.

That's 792 tons of pollutants, and doesn't even include the water.I'll bet you can dig up stats like this for many states.

http://www.environmentcolorado.org/envco.asp?id2=16181

My point is every state dumps pollutants. It 's certainly not a reason to avoid moving to West Virginia.

I still maintain that the notion you can't get fresh vegetables is silly.I can't ever remember not being able to get them.

Nash,as usual you have no actual point. You make a statement, then sidestep and bring up some irrelevant political issue.

Ohio doesn't suck.

I live in Columbus and after living in Cleveland, Baltimore and West Palm Beach I can say that no other town is easier to get around in traffic wise.

In fact noplace in Ohio is more than a three hour drive from Columbus.  We've had a boat on the lake (that would be Lake Erie) and in Salt Fork.  We've got skiing (I prefer Snowshoe, WV for east coast skiing) though it's not the best.  Not bad for the area.

Cost of living isn't bad, right now fuel runs from $1.90-$2.10 depending on the mood of the gas stations.  Housing isn't too crazy either if you're looking into more rural areas.

My family tree came from Steubenville, OH/Wheeling/Parkersburg/Follansbee, WV areas and I wouldn't suggest you live near the river.  The area isn't economically healthy and the only reason I go back to visit is for Christmas and Deer or Turkey season.  Lots of animals in them thur hills.

I'm looking into moving to the Louisville, KY area if a few dominos fall the right way for me.  Kentucky is some of the most beautiful country we've got.  The summer's aren't horrible, the winter's aren't bad.  Lake Cumberland is close by if you've got a boat.  Lots of animals (for us redneck huntin' types).

I don't know anything about Ohio or WV but I'd go with North Carolina.  I lived there a couple of years and wouldn't mind going back.  The mountains in the west are beautiful but hot in summer.  I lived in NE corner just below VA border - Norfolk was a short drive for city stuff but it was quiet and rural and cost of living is great.  I64 gives you good road access.  $250,000 in Elizabeth City will buy you almost anything.  Also EC has a great airport for GA flying - really quiet but good facilities as it shares with Coast Gaurd and there is lots of flat spaces to fly those RC stuff.

Check it out here

Couple of items...

1. Who you getting the Toy hauler from and what brand?
2. Look at Missouri. Lake of the Ozarks is beautiful country and fairly inexpensive.  Also some nice places up by St. Joseph.

If you need to downhill ski, mountain climb or surf, Ohio does suck for you.
If you hate snow or a bit of humidity and heat, Ohio sucks for you as well.
Otherwise, Ohio is great for many reasons.

However, I’m not going to try to sell Ohio to you Hangtime; it may not be the best for you.
I am going to try to sell you on a different approach to finding a place to live.
Start with your passion; find good model airplane fields and clubs where you would consider living,
and then look for a house within sight of that field.
There are probably hundreds of fields in the areas that you are considering,
some will be in overpriced areas, and some will be in areas that are too depressed.
What you don’t want is to settle on an area, buy a house and then find out that the only decent field is two hours away.

Here’s the field about two miles from my house:

Club link: http://www.cmac.org/index.html

You know model airplanes better than any of us,
start by looking at your resources and connections for the best fields and consistent flying conditions;
go from there.
