Look at what's cooking in the X-Plane scenery department.

This is for real, but it is under development.

It is global mesh, and much more. But I'm not sure how/if satellite photos are used.

its all well and good doing all the work on the scenery....

but i think they need to put a little more effort into the aircraft.

Still prefer the professional VFR sceneries for MSFS myself. Think most would agree compared to a basic terrain mesh and landclass they are well worth the $$ especially for VFR flying.

Switzerland anyone?

That sure looks good Gixer, but those VFR sceneries have very limited availability. That X-Plane scenery under development is global default, it's not meant to compete with dedicated, local VFR sceneries.

I have MSFS too, but I'm so put off by the poor framerates on the instruments. I think the instruments update at half the general frame rate, very odd.

Global mesh, landclass and textures have been around for years for MSFS, suprising it's taken so long to reach X-Plane esp considering how long ago the shuttle did the mapping.

Not sure on the instruments, I fly PMDG and RFP 742 regular basis and framerates are fine.

Crabbing a 742 into a 9,000 ft runway is more fun then dropping explosives. Eventually combat sims get pretty boring like most quake like games. But flying online for a VA or doing ATC is alot more fun and rewarding.

Actually, X-Plane has had that since October, 2001.  The stuff being talked about above is enhanced global textures.
