Am I ill?

I actualy found myelf agreeing with that Mr Bush. Cancel Debt yes, give aid, yes but sort out mismangement and corruption too.

The big question is how will the G8 nations do that? Any (senible) suggetions because I'm damned if I know.

He's right, these nations have been stealing from the rest of the world for far to long. You can't deny your people polio shoots claming it's a "white mans" plot against them, and them beg for money to fight disease, You can't rape children then complain about the spread of aids. Steal productive farms from their white owners give them to black owners with no means to run them successfully and then cry about famine.

I tend to agree with Bush as well.

However.....we are talking about AFRICA,  the whole continent, not just country specific issues as raised by JBA.

Someone recently asked me, in a discussion on this very topic, that no matter how many billions in aid given to Africa to date (and been squandered for the most part) does it equate to the misappropriation of the billions in raw materials, oil, diamonds, gold etc that has been looted from Africa by western nations?

I could not give an answer.

Food for thought.

I read today that £400bn of aid had gone into Africa in the last four decades. And what do they have to show for it? Not much. That's because most of the money ends up in the back pockets of tyrannical dictators and/or is spent on arms to fight various wars.

It's all very well these lefties and assorted Guardian readers at Live8 denouncing George Bush and lamenting the plight of Africa, but... they never mention the corrupt African dictators. If more well intentioned donors of aid cash knew how Africa really works, they'd soon realise that they might as well be putting their money in the fire.

I gave a wad to help the tsunami victims last December, but I won't be giving a penny to Africa because I know it would end up in Mugabe's pocket. Or he would do what he did before - offer food to the needy upon presentation of their Zanu-PF membership cards.

Yes Curval you have a point there.

No Live 8 is not the answer. No we shouldn't give money to corrupt dictators. But Africa needs something fast before it wakes up and takes what it wants rather than asks.

Maybe we shouldn't have given up our Empire? ;)
