B24 catches fire too easy
« on: July 08, 2005, 03:24:14 PM »
I was in my P-51D, found a formation of B24s. Attacked from high 6 diving at 300+ MPH .. fired a 2-3 second burst and 2 fires started. The drone exploded before I passed under it.

I zoomed up to get in position for another pass. Came back down in near identacle attack. Again a 2-3 second burst and again fire erupted from the B24. As I pulled up to get in position again, the send B24 exploded.

----- I thought this was far too easy to kill a B24 with just .50 MGs....

----- Last night, almost the same circumstances... very similar attack.... killed 2 B24s in 2 guns passes.... too easy.

B17s rarely die that easy. LANCS rarely die that easy.

I don't know if I was extremely lucky and got a large hit % on those passes, but based on my 15% gunnery right now, I doubt I shot that good.

It displays the primary (the single pair) guns in both weapons banks. Pressing either trigger fires just that set.

I've done this a few times by mistake and end up firing only 2 guns instead of 6. You take notice pretty quick when you can't kill anything :)

.50cals are API. That stands for Armor Piercing Incendiary. They are made to catch stuff on fire. Imagine what something that was made to catch stuff on fire hiting a flying fueltank. kabooom or ahhhhhhh it burns it burnsss!!!!!

Then .50 APIs should make a lot more planes burst into flames just as easy. The B24 was a sturdy bomber, and was not known as a flying flame thrower as far as I know.

And if that happens the Spitfire Mk1 should be to. Cause they had APIS to.

I don't think the issue here is the API.  THe original poster is saying that B-24's seem to catch fire much more easily than B-17's and Lancasters, given the same amount of hits.

I agree with him.  I've found that a short burst in the area between the fuselage and the engine on the right wing of the B-24 almost always (if my aim is on...) results in a long, streaming fire.  THis almost never happens to a B-17 or Lancaster.

Think how often you've seen the roman candle B-24's as compared to the 17's or Lancs.  THe only other plane that I've noticed that lights up the MA that often is the Zero.

I'm not complaining about the B-24's - I'm merely agreeing with Midnight that they catch fire very easily.  I enjoy being able to conserve ammo and still kill a buff!

The B24 is just a flying fueltank it had bigger fueltanks then the B17 or Lanc. thus more fuel in the wings. that why most any hits in the wings cause a fuel leak and when a API or cannon hit the fuel it catches in fire.

Also, the drones might have been exploding as the pilot ejected from his fiery ride, into a fresh one. One possibility.

I don't so much mind that they catch on fire. I mind that if any one B24 is on fire anywhere forward of my plane's position within a 1,000 mile radius my FPS drops to 7 and stays there until the flame is gone. Heck even fighters on fire don't drop my FPS like that!
