Possible Mig-27 Sighting?
« on: July 13, 2005, 11:38:24 AM »
It's the only thing I can say of what I saw..

Saw a wing of three aircraft takeing off from NAS jax.

Triangle wing, shark-fin tail.

F18 sounding engines.

Color was blue-grey/white.

They didn't fly over head.. they were at a distance, couldn't see any intakes.. or anything else..

Others think F16's..

But they were too long for f16's..

F111 sounds about right. seen enough of them from Lakenheath I think it was.

Back when Gadaffi got pasted it was around the same time we were all sent leaflets on how to survive a nuclear attack! I can remember we felt like tgt number one in Suffolk. When those planes began going over regularly on the way to Libya we thought they were Moscow bound and WW3 had started! Scary stuff for a teenager.

IAI F-21 Kfir.  They are operated by a contractor called ATAC as simulated threat aircraft.

May have been RAF Tornado's.  They are often sent to the states on exercises.

Tornado was my first thought, but I thought they woulda been darker..

They were flying in loose formation..

there were alot of aircraft F18's scrambling around about 30mins after I saw them, and a P3 was up in the air right after their formation..

So probally a training exersise..

Either way they were sharp looking planes.

Are there any F-111 still flying? I thought they were all retired in 1996.

That mission was handed over to the EA-6B in the 90's.

I thought they were still running F-4s with F-16s running Wild Weasel missions? They completely retire them from the role after Desert Storm?
