LVT-4 on my turf!
« on: July 14, 2005, 06:28:19 AM »
In August and September, Clint Eastwood is shooting some scenes from the movie "The Flag of our fathers" in my neighbourhood here in Iceland. One of the props is an LVT in a useable condition, - these are scarce today. Anyway, here's a link:
http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=14856868&BRD=1719&PAG=461&dept_id=25271&rfi=6

Will try a pic:

It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

Dangit! The thing is here!
Just saw it. They also have several landing crafts as well.
Hundreds of statist are now assigned to play the role of the marines on the Iwo Jima landings, - it's a bigger project than the landing in "Saving Private Ryan"
I'm a lucky SOB, will be there :D

Simple.
Black sand, Volcanic landscape as on IWO.
Plenty of water and food, hotels and service, and people for the casting, which is NOT available on IWO.

Think they're gonna try and top the landings in SPR.
In that film they used only 200 men and 5 landing craft, - but in this one much more.
The LVT looks pretty good BTW.
The other craft are post-war, but identical to the WW2 craft AFAIK.
I can not speak of anything in detail that occurs on the set while this is going on, - had to sign a paper about that, so I will keep to only what evryone knows.
We´ll be shooting soon, but before that we have to do army drilling (Iceland does not have an army so we have no experienced soldiers).
We also had our army haircut and costume fitting, which is absolutely an authentic suit down to yer undies :D
We will be assigned to platoons, each platoon carrying a variety of weapons etc.
Then I can say no more.
Will link some pictures of our black beaches and lava.
Here you go:

which should look like this:

So, you see the landscape. Will try to post more images as images from Iwo Jima as well.
But I look forward to seeing the movie, - wonder when it comes out.

THAT and Iwo jima is owned by the Japanese military(so much for our victory there[JK]) and few people are allowed there(only Iwo vets and family)

Half way through a take, run naked across the beach screaming "LOOK AT ME, I'M BULLET PROOF!"

Lol, the props guy told me when we were fitting the uniform (original stuff as my Tommy gun should also be), that I'd better keep my belt tight.
One does not want to lose one's trousers down in the middle of shooting, lol.
"Hey, look at that guy wearing no trousers, - that's me mom" :D

News update.
Been looking at the LVT4 (as well as some trooped-up LVT-2's and Higgins boats) in the last 3 days or so.
Nice tank, paddles on in the water like mad, and easily climbs up beaches, while the Higgins has problems with turning at the landing, - especially if there is some surf and it is lightly loaded.
The LVT-4 has had ample sailing time during the film shooting, and has fired some volleys from it's mortar (BOOM :D)
The film is going to be very good I think, with some very big scenes.
Yesterday I had to storm a beachead and then advance, ending up in a bomb-crater, with some 500 troops.
I cannot co into detail, we cannot photograph, so there it ends.
The only thing I can do is to provide links to newspaper pics etc.
Well, it rocks anyway.

News update.
Been lobbing around in an LVT quite a bit.
The troop carriers they have on the set are LVT4's!
Original LVT-2 does not have a ramp on the back.
The engine is a rotary continental rating 250hp.
Needless to say, the sounds are quite different from AH LVT.
Armament is 2x.50 cal. (Noisy stuff)
It's shocking how they play with this in rather rough seas, - the cannon armed one really is bobbing about as if it's about to sink!
Their capacity to climb sand dunes is good, - they get where a tank won't. Was looking at a Sherman trying to climb a steep dune yesterday, - didn't stand a chance against an LVT.
Anyway, as I said, it's gonna be a hell of a movie ;)

If you're storming a beach and trip, do you suddenly become a casualty? :rofl

That is an interesting question OOZ, how are casualties assigned?  Do they assign people to drop at a certain time, and in a certain way, or is it more random where they say I need 5 of you 20 guys to drop dead somewhere on the beach?  I guess it depends on the shot.
