That depends on who you ask.
Officially it isn't an independent country, however they do have their own flag and own government.
The UN considers it as a domestic issue and doesn't want to mess with the issue.
China considers Taiwan as part of the mainland, which why they're opposing the indenpendency.
The US however wants to mess with the issue.

However why the US wants to mess with the issue, thats something I don't know.
Maybe they want to have an "ally" off the coast of China.

Now, if I lived in Australia or New Zealand, I'd be *****ing up a blue streak about wot in hell is happening.. but unlike Finland, they have the Big W.

Man, it would be such a tragedy to get China upset at the U.S. to the point of them stopping exportation.
  Sheesh, just think about it.
We might actualy have to start manufacturing here again. There would be that terrible problem of having jobs available here at home for those that want them.
We might also have to drag out and dust off the old "Made In The U.S.A." banners again.
Another end result might be the reduction in the U.S. poverty level. That would take a large chunk out of speech writing sessions for the politicians.
  Tragic I tell ya.
Democracy is two wolves deciding on what to eat. Freedom is a well armed sheep protesting the vote.

Europe is in the same boat, Fishu.

I'm in Global Supply Chain.  I see/have seen as many factories producing products for Europe as I did the US when I traveled to China (which used to be multiple times a year).

That was not a recon plane, it was a naval four engined air
superiority fighter.  See what happened to that chinese mig
when it got too close? :lol

Technically they didn't shoot it down, it decided to land after
the Mig ran into it.

According to Chirac, they could use a few Chinese joints in

I haven't argued otherwise.
So far it has been about the US and China's economy, which why I haven't taken Europe into the discussion over rest of the world.

However now that we're talking about europe...
If you've read what I've said, China could opt to continue trading with other countries and just forbid trade with the USA.
As far as I know, Europe isn't very keen to mess with the Taiwan issue, leaving chinese and americans pretty much together.
Therefore a possible trade war could be also "fought" between the two and leave most of the other countries aside of it.
That is, if China would want to keep up the pseudo capitalism economy. It does still work without the USA.
However China could just as well decide to close up it's borders and leave everyone outside, because it can.
I do think its quite likely they're trying to keep their country self sufficient in case the pseudo capitalism doesn't work in a way or another.

Fishu, we ain't 'messing with the issue'.. we're maintaining the status quo, established policy sealed by agreements with the two parties in question. China agreed not to use force to bring Taiwan under Communist control, we assured Taiwan we'd protect them should the Chinese renig and give it a try. For that agreement, Tawan gave up it's seat on the UN and gave it to Mainland China in 1971.

Unlike mainland China, Taiwan has a democraticly elected government. The Island was the last refuge of the anti-communist forces, the Non communist government fled there after world war II when the commies took over china. While the resta china slipped even further into poverty, Taiwan, with it's freely elected government became the 5th largest economic power in the region.. free trade and capitalism being what it was, it stood as an example of what China could be if governed democraticly.

China considers Taiwan to be a part of China, a state in rebellion. The US for 30 years supported Taiwans seat on the UN.. then under Tricky Dick, we changed the rules on Taiwan.. dropped the 'two chinas' policy and opened fromal relations with the mainland.. taiwan's seat on the UN went to Mao's thugs.

This unhappy little milestone would have been the end of Taiwan, but we made a side deal with them to protect them from communist agression or invasion from China, supply them with arms to defend themselves and it's this policy that's kept the commies from overunning the place.. every time the commies get ugly, we plop a few Carrier Groups in the Straights and wag our fingers at the naughty commies... "mess with them, you mess with us."

Now, should Taiwan VOTE for a reunification for China, hey; that's kewl, we stroll away whistling a few bars of... how do you whistle in chinese? Anyway, as long as mainland china threatens force for implementation of reunification, the US is expected to defend Taiwan

I don't think we'd toss any nukes... but if the commies do; well, welcome back to the wonderful MAD MAD world.

Common sense dictates that what the commies want is more kewl capitalist cash, like they got when the lease ran out in Hong Kong. The sure don't want the cash engine on Taiwan reduced to a smoldering wreck and their biggest cash cow customers all bent outta shape because a couple of CG groups got turned into fishing reefs.

So, stands to reason the Chinese are searching for the right mix of military and economic muscle to be applied, so the US would be convinced that it's treaty obligations with Taiwan are more costly than they are worth.. allowing mainland China to 'peacefully' readopt it's 'errant province' in order to keep the walmarts open.

Just another American State Department Sellout In Progress folks.. nothin to be concerned about. Look for lower prices next month at Walmart.

I remember when Japan was going to destroy the US economically back in the 80s.

China doesnt worry me in the least.

There is nothing in my life that I could not live without that comes from China.

a very short lived situation.. the chinese are steadily eroding our strategic materials dependancy.

As an example, I said the same thing about Japan 20 years ago.. and as it stands now, not a single battery system used in any device (military or otherwize) has cells in it made in the USA. Cut us off from the pacific rim now, when your batteries go dead, we're done for... and battery factories ain't here anymore thanks to pollution regulations. :) That's just one example. There's many, many more...
