Return to Castle Wolfenstein multiplayer test
« on: September 18, 2001, 07:43:00 AM »
Go here:  http://www.3dactionplanet.com/wolfenstein/

Get that thing!  Best place to download the demo is likely your closest TUCOWS mirror.

Guys... it's like Saving Private Ryan.  It is most cool.  I'm having a BLAST with this thing.  It's team based.  There are different character classes, and you need a good mix of them to survive.  Only one map in the test... but what a complete blast.

I know lots of you folks here will appreciate this one!

I've been playing this a LOT the last two nights. I look for the larger servers to join.  Not nearly as complicated as AH aircombat it has however fulfilled my need to shoot and blow up things (for a half hour or so each night I actually am able to get online) quite nicely. Quite a bit of fun  :D

I've got about 8 guys into it at work now.  What a complete blast.

My favourite thing to do playing Axis:

1.  Wait for allies to blow the doorway entrance through the sea wall.

2.  Wait in the trench at the bunker entrance while the assault team gathers, with myself as a Soldier with a flamethrower, and an LT.

3.  After they blow the door, let the Allied team rush in.

4.  Have the LT pop smoke for an air strike outside the door (throw it out the pillbox window) while I simultaneously turn the inside of the pillbox into a really big BBQ!  Most of 'em fry up nicely, while the rest run out and get blown to chunks by the air strike.  Muhahaha.

My favourite thing to do as Allies:

1.  After you breach the  sea wall, fight your way through the breach area.  Now as an Engineer, run up the ladder (perferrably with help) and sprint over to the Axis spawn point.

2.  Drop some Dynamite under a table/in a corner in the spawn area.

3.  Although it's likely futile, try to escape or hide.  You'll likely get gunned down, but just wait for a medic and watch while your demo charge takes out a room full of bad guys.

This one's much tougher to execute.  You have to time it so that another wave is spawning just as the det charge goes off.  When you get it right though, it's REALLY cool.  :D

My favourite in that game is to take a sniper rifle, find a good hideout and start getting some headshots...

People get really pissed when they realize they can't stick their head out anywhere visible without getting their brains blown out =)

Also its very rewarding to duel with another sniper.. sneaking into positions and trying to find where the other is..

lol. I though I was the only one having a blast with this one. I haven't found a host with payers organized enough for some decent "maneuvers" and tactics. But your post sure gave me a couple of ideas to try out when I can!
I've only played for a couple of hours and mostly as a soldier or Lieutenant. I'm just getting the hang of calling in artillery or an air strike. But as a soldier I either use the historically appropriate MG for which ever side I'm on or I use the sniper rifle too. And as MrRipley said, it can be fun working a sniper duel  :)

I haven't gotten the sniper rifle going yet... I couldn't get it to work before.  I think I need to hit the "alternate" key or something.

I really like playing with the LT though.  Nothing smacks down enemy snipers like an artillery strike!  :D  The trick is to call it in a bit behind their position so that they don't see the initial smoke round.  Muhahaha.  Plus the best way to spot them is with a sneaky LT and his binoculars.  I just love doing this and taking out the snipers in the Allied sniper hut from clear accross the map.  :D

Dammit... I played Wolfenstien back in 93 when I had my BBS up and running.  It was such a horribly addictive game.  I knew it would set the standard for a whole new type of gaming.

Now, the new release seems to be doing it all over again.  I hate that I am stuck here at work while you dweebs are discussing the game's virtues.  A plague of FDBs on you all!

The worst part is, this is just the multiplayer test.

When the full game gets released, it's going to be just like the first time.  :)  All that addictive single player gaming will be there as well.

I played it, but it was a bit too arcadey for me. I didn't like the 'stylised' WW2 atmosphere.

I liked the flame-thrower and the bazooka though - they are the best flame effects I've ever seen. And the lighting/smoke effects were superb too.

Doesn't beat Day of Defeat's gameplay though.  :)
War! Never been so much fun. War! Never been so much fun! Go to your brother, Kill him with your gun, Leave him lying in his uniform, Dying in the sun.

"Doesn't beat Day of Defeat's gameplay though"

Might not, but it's free! And it's multiplayer!  :)  The original game was what got me hooked me on PC games after a 6 or 7 year absence. lol. I used to think the DOS based games on the IBM AT at work were the balls.  ;)

Lephturn to bring up the sniper rifles scope sight use the right mouse button. Hold the button down and the scope sight stays up to your eye while you make fine adjustments. Move the aiming point around too much and the scope sight drops making you require the view.

Sorry AKdejaVu. Actually have not had time to play atr work. Too much going on to restore telecom svces to NYC. I've been getting on late at night before going to bed.  Where as combat in AH takes more time and concentration, which I do not have at 11pm, this is perfect for a few minutes of outright mayhem.   :)

Yeah, it's quite entertaining, and I don't usually like FPS-style games  :)

What I find really interesting is that this is the SECOND game with awesome graphics and really high frame rate using OpenGL. (IL-2 being the first). I can play this game in windowed mode, 1024 res, with fine frame rate on an Athlon 800 with a Geforce 2 MX.

I played this game for about an hour last night.  I loved it.  I've always been a R6 fan and this is right along the same theme.

Damn it kicks ass.

I particularly enjoyed being a sniper.  I'd piss so many people off.  As an allied landing on the shore, I'd pick of krauts in the pillboxes.

I must say that the way the weapons are modeled is about the best I've seen in an FPS.  This game is awesome.
