Oceana will stay open ... for now

The federal base-closing commission today conditionally spared the master jet base at Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia Beach, giving state and local officials a stern warning that steps must be taken to halt encroachment within six months.

Under the Oceana action, which came on a 7-0 vote with two abstentions, the city of Virginia Beach must condemn and acquire the property in a potential crash zone.

If the city and state do not meet requirements to increase safety for pilots practicing at the field by March, steps will be taken to move the master jet base back to Cecil Field in Florida. The master jet operations moved to Virginia Beach when Cecil Field was closed in 1999.

My wager is that they will not take the necessary steps. That is some prime real estate they are talking about condemning. That is going to be a real nasty fight to resolve in 6 months.

Cecil is surrounded by farm land. The area has not change that much over the last 10 years. Cecil was closed originally because of pure politics. Virginia had more political clout at that time. That situation is changing rapidly. Cecil is the best base in the country to fly high performance military aircraft from. It is far enough away from any major population centers with large tracks of open land around the base. Jacksonville has plenty of open land in other areas to satify community development for years to come.

Yes, I live in Jacksonville. Stationed at Cecil field from 1976-1980, USN VS-32. Returned and made it my home in 1990.
