Opinions anyone? Here's mine:
George W. Bush pulled a rabbit out of his *** and gave the best speech of his presidency. He had to stand up and take responsability and he did. He's also going to do something about it. I think the DHS is in for a major shakeup. For the first time in a long time I actually have some respect for him.

It was good. Short on rhetoric, long on practicality. I kinda zoned out and re-awoke thinkin' I was watchin' a Jerry Lewis telethon. That sounds bad, but it's good.

I didn't hear it, nor did I read any articles about it or transcripts of it. That being said, I think the speech was a bit long in the tooth and full of circular logic, contradictions and not-so-subtle prods at the minorities.

More federal authority over state local matters...

More federal 'responsibility'

If I were a liberal I would have loved to...

true 'nuff. All that money has got to come from somewhere.

In case anyone's askin', I have an idea where to get it. Turf the desert follies and rebuild a great American city.

He sounded like a democrat.  I hope he reconsiders.  I was disappointed by his comments.

He pulled a rabbit alright, I bet he's hopeing that rabbit doesn't hop away.
But he can basically do whatever he wants to at this point, he's already done his 2 terms.

was average bush to me.  Then again I remember hearing the 50k body bags and 10k dead in norlins and all that.

The big story appears to be that this was an especially powerful hurricane and caused about 800 deaths and 125 billion in property damage.  Thats the big national picture.

The local picture, in norlins is a lot uglier.  hellugly and totally embarrasing globally, at least to me.  Seeing the crap in norlins and the way those people were treating each other was my most embarrasing national moment, at least in a long long time....

When you live in New Orleans, you're either part of the problem or you learn to insulate yourself from the problem. Up to now there was absolutely no way to fix the problem. If anything, this disaster could change New Orleans from a welfare city to a working city. And before anyone starts, this is not a racist statement. This is a work ethic statement.

I'm curious also. New Orleans has been plastered all over American television sets for about two weeks now. We had major problems before this tragedy , e.g., one of the worst public school systems in the country, 25-35% unemployment, racial divide, one of the worst murder rates in the country, politcal coruption etc.

How would you suggest fixing such a city? This is a completely honest question- what is your perspective on such a city?

First complete and massive rebuilding. Some areas setup as parks and memorials. Then others rebuilt about 5 ft higher. Massive flood and surge controls like the Netherlands built to account for the worse storm possible not 100 yr storm surges. The wetlands and barrier Islands redone as the environmentalists have requested which would have helped with the above in preventing this tragedy.
Stop allowing private developers free range in destroying natural barriers by over developement.

I realized recently that I am a Republican. Unfortunately, a 1970s era Republican.

Both the Democrats and Republicans are rushing for more federal control, more federal spending (at least the Democrats note a need to actually pay for the waste... wow, what a winner there).

As others pointed out in a previous tthread, many of the poor folk might not be able to afford to live in the "new" New Orleans condos and lofts. When was the last time anybody built affordable housing? From what I heard on the news today, most of the "displaced" seem comfortable in Houston anyway :)
