Setup for September 23
« on: September 22, 2005, 08:10:50 AM »
Thought we'd try Karnak's suggestion this week:

CHINA-BURMA-INDIA, 1944-1945

Overrun by the Japanese at the beginning of the war, the CBI
was a backwater front for two years.  During this period the
Allies concentrated on overcoming the logistical nightmares
of supporting armies and air forces in the trackless jungles
and mountains of the theater.  Finally, late in 1944, the British
and Americans launched offensives to recapture Burma and
open a land route to China.  The Japanese responded with a
fierce counterattack.  Operations in Burma concluded only
at the beginning of May, 1945; the war ended before the
Allies could continue their planned advance into Malaya.

Of questionable importance, and largely forgotten, the CBI
was the scene of some of the most savage fighting, under
some of the most brutal conditions, of the entire war.

This setup is the work of Karnak's research into the aircraft
available to the participants, and of his thoughts on how to
translate those aircraft into the AH environment.

Notes:

Puffy ack is .25; low-level ack is .5.
Fuel burn is 1.5.
Radar is: Tower 158400; Sector 237600.
Killshooter is on.
Friendly collisions are off.
Visibility is 12 miles.
Base capture settings are standard.
Carriers have no planes and should play no
part.

We will watch to see how the Spit 14s work out.
Initially they will be enabled at all airfields.

The "front line" of 1944 has been fussed with
to facilitate combat, while (hopefully) preserving
the flavor of the theater.

I am glad that my suggestion was useful.  I hope the setup goes well and is fun.

Unfortunately my computer decided to develop a catastrophic hardware conflict on Tuesday evening.  At this time it does not look promising for me to have a computer for the next week or so. :(  I am having a friend who knows more than I do about these things take a look at it tonight as I have exhausted my knowledge.  The RAID card won't even format the drives anymore, giving an error message now.  If he can't see a way through it I may be ordering the parts for my next computer tomorrow.  This was planned for 6 months from now and I don't really have the cash, but I need a computer for some of my important real life tasks.

If the setup works well though, I am sure it will be used again sometime in the future.

That's an interesting matchup.  The Spit XIV should actually match up well with the Ki-84.  Both are excellent planes with an edge in turning to the Frank and an edge in climb and acceleration to the Spit XiV.

Spit XIVs did indeed see service in the CBI Theater in 1945.

I have a book that references Ginger Lacey's squadron recieving lowback Spitfire Mk XIVs and him refusing them on the basis that "They weren't bloody Spitfires!"  So they gave those to a squandron that was flying war weary Hurricane Mk IICs and got some high backed Spitfire Mk XIVs for Lacey's squadron.

I also have an account of Spit XIVs being flown off of a jeep carrier shortly before the war ended.  They had to bind the brakes extra tight, put wedges of wood in to hold the flaps open 15 degrees (Spits lack multi stage flaps) in order to do it.  The pilot would run the engine up to full power and when the brakes started slipping he'd release them and accelerate fast enough to get airborne.

My suggestion was to introduce the Spit XIVs later in the setup, say on Tuesday or Wednesday.

We'll see.  Back when the CT drew steady crowds in the 30s and 40s, you could incrementally change the plane set during the week and maintain group interest.  These days we don't have those crowds - yet.  My thinking was to see if we could grab people's attention right at the start.  If it turns out that the Spit 14s are too uber, we can limit them somehow.  But I'm with Lev, I think that the Ki84 v. Spit14 will be a good match, and one that it's hard to get in the MA.

Please note changes from the MOTD originally posted here:

Japanese are Rooks, not Bishops.

The Bishop HQ and base, unfortunately, are located near the front lines.  Please don't bomb them, it will screw up the arena.

Karnak invented this setup, and the poor man's computer is dead.  So post frequently here so that he can get at least a bit of vicarious pleasure.

I just learned that I have to be out of the country for most of next week, so if anything goes wrong, post it here so that one of the other CM's can fix it.

It appears to be a latewar RAF vs Japan set up for the CBI to me, which explains the lack of P40 and 51B, 51D and P38J/L since the RAF weren't flying those in the CBI.

Might have to wander in and get me a Spit IX :)

17 Squadron got their XIVs in July of 45.  The carrier launch, from HMS Trumpeter was in September 45 after the end of hostilities
