Cuy Chactado
« on: September 22, 2005, 09:36:37 PM »
Just got back from Peru this morning on a business trip. Had the opportunity to sample Cuy Chactado. It's actually quite tasty. I didn't have my camera with me at the time so I am posting some links from other sites of what it looked like. It's what we call a guinea pig and they are from the Andes mountains.

The beer on the right, Cusquena is very good and that bowl on the left is the original home made cornnuts.

I sampled cuy in Arequipa, Peru. It's a very nice colonial city in Southern Peru. Think I'll make a run to the pet store this weekend.

Nope a Guinea Pig. I had it one more time as well during my stay. It was a little like somewhere between a rabbit and squirrel in flavor and texture.

Do a search on Cuy.

The ribs and the back strap (tenderloin section) were my favorite parts. Meat pulled right off the bone. Legs were tasty as well.  More meat on the hind legs. It's fileted out and the intestines removed. I didn't get the chance to watch but could figure it out. I believe they may also use a marinade, but it was definitely nicely seasoned.

There is a version where they do stuff them.

Mine was not stuffed but they do leave like the liver and heart attached on the underside. I didn't try those on the first one but my cohorts convinced me on the second and it was not bad, but I preferred the meat portion. Probably behind the neck and lower back was best. The skin was nice and crispy and quite favorful.

This was in a nice restaurant called Tradicion Arequipena.

I suppose I could eat hamster but not just "a" hamster. One would need about 4 to 6 hamsters for a meal. However it sounds about as much fun as eating hickory nuts unless you were really hungry or trying to survive. Too much work involved for the quanity of meat per hamster.

Ethnocentric I may be... but the chances of me eating that are slim. When in Rome, do as the go to burger king instead.

That looks remarakably similar to the KFC snack box I had recently.

I recently started preparing for my anual hike through the mtns,I generally get ready a month early,we do a survival hike,no food,no water, just ourselves and a knife,a few pieces of fishing line and a hook.Anyway we have a new member this year who is from Laos, born of the Hmong people and as we discussed the trip,I asked him if he had ever done any survivalist trips? He's says to "Jeff,I'm an Asian,we eat everything"Anyway long story short we went to his house last weekend and I had dog meat for the first time in my life.It really isnt as bad as what I'd always thought.I guess it's just the way we're brought up.
