When searching for RAM on the internet i found that my computer has the PC2700.... wife went to circuit city, told them that she needed the PC2700 and they gave her the PC3200.... can i use the 3200??

Yep. Even if your motherboard can only take advantage of the speed of PC2700, the faster stuff will just run at the slower speed. Plus that way if you upgrade later, you can keep the RAM.

well found out that my computer cant support a gig of ram... even though is supposed to..... i keep one 512 in the computer all is good... i put both of them in windows wont boot... even the HP tech was stumped...

im running windows xp... another thing that got me troubled... when i go to the control panel and click system this is what i see.....

Pavilion
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 processor
3200+
997 MHz
512 MB of RAM

whats got me wondering is the 997 MHz part.... is that supposed to be my processor speed?? shouldnt it say 2 GHz... cause thats what i got....

The processor will run only at its maxium speed when it is required. What it is called is quiet cool I believe. Basically what it does is if the computer doesn't require alot of processor power it actually will declock it to cut heat down (prolongs the life of processor) and also its power consumption. Other then that U got nothing to worry about. AMD I believe only uses this technology.

More than likely they put the wrong processor in, set the voltage too low, set the wrong multiplier, or some other freaky problem. HP is famous for that sort of thing, among others.

Never Mind, I should read the papers I get subscriptions to before I open my big mouth. This is something new and I've not encountered it. I cant for the life of me see why anyone would want to use it, but I still think thats something you have to purposefully turn on yourself, and only with certain motherboards?

Yes u can turn it off as that is how I got mine set. Its set by in the bios. In my bios its called quiet cool. Basically when the system has a high demand, the system automatically speeds the processor up to what it needs. I don't bother with this setup as my computer 90% of the time gonna need its full potential.
