the real problem with the community..
« on: October 22, 2005, 09:28:58 AM »
humor...  there are a few bad apples.... probly no more than a dozen or so who have a sense of humor..  Not just a good schoolyard one but an evil one.

If you could just get rid of those bad apples you could have a real worthwhile community and general discussion group with a real sense of purpose.

comon guys... I like a good fart joke as much as the anybody but this so called "dark" or "sophisticated" humor is just too much... it hurts peoples feelings and makes this whole thing look like.... well like some kind of game.

I think if we all showed a little sensitivity and appreciation for the hard work of those who are trying to make this more than a game....  we would all be better people.  It must be painful to work so hard at anything or to make a serious post about a serious subject and then... for all your effort.... be the butt of a joke and have all that effort scoffed at.

addmitedly... I am as much to blame as anyone...  terms like "toolshed" and "mouse wielder" "lutwussie"  while accurate and funny.... can damage... I admit to being the author of many hurtful terms here.

worse..."wussie" and "sissy" and "make people play with you" are not only insensitve on the face of it but... no doubt bring back painfull memories of childhood for many.

for someone like me to be amung such sensitive folk is just not right..  I will do my best to stay off the general forum...  for..

If you have nothing constructive to say you shouldn't say anything...

Explanations
« Reply #4 on: October 22, 2005, 10:10:12 AM »
A simple explanation of some of the terms used may go well towards people understanding your "humour" better.

I for one have been in the game for 3 years plus and have to admit to never hearing, or understanding some of the phrases you just mentioned.

Toolshed?

Mouse Wielder?
(altho I assume, maybe incorrectly, that that could be aimed in my direction, being that I fly with a mouse!)

Lutwussie?

Inventing phrases to enforce a point is all good and well, but if the intended do not understand, it becomes a somewhat wasted effort.

The problem with the community is a very simple one. Some take this far, far, far too seriously, it is after all just a game. Or was the last time I looked!

thing is Lazs, no one cares about you makng jokes with good humour like you do, albeit with some bitterness lately it would seem.

what people dont like is the 'jokers' whos only joke is to try and wind people up, or preferably hurt their 'over sensitive game feelings' 100% of the time with totaly witless smack and put downs.

there is a difference between a loveable prankster or comedian and a spitefull bully.

its not about anything other than individual enjoyment, you play your game, everyone else plays there own game both here and in the arenas.

the real problem really comes when somone who doesnt get your homour atempts to recreate it with no class or wit. then it becomes pathetic mewling like a baby crying for attention.

oh....ill just pull this hook out of my mouth now and swim off if you dont mind.

The idea that what someone types on the intardnet can hurt your feelings is what I dont understand. Maybe I just have thicker skin that most.

While I'll somewhat agree with this Grits (at least the sticks & stones theory), another thing I don't get about the internet is how some people apparently assume that every pilot in this game isn't an actual human being as well.

Don't get me wrong, most of the stuff is just funny.  Then I'd say much of the stuff that doesn't come off as being a joke probably doesn't simply because sarcasim and inflection don't always do well in text.  Still, there's those times when we all really lay into each other and it would take a very generous person to think everything's in jest.

Of course, "what's a little fight, tomorrow we'll be boys again"...  And when someone in the community needs a helping hand or anything else with a personal tragedy...  The community responds with alacrity.

It just seems strange to say one's feelings could be helped by what someone types over the internet, but it's impossible for them to be hurt.

(When are we getting a "shrug" emoticon, anyway?)

vudak shady... :aok

I don't take what anyone on this intardnet game says to me seriously. You can call me anything you want and i will laugh at you and then come back with my witty response. They are just words and this is just the intardnet. However if you find a way to reach through the screen and punch me in the face we have a problem...

my 2 sence :D

The internet is an evolving world and the social impact is still to be determined.

A lot of people 'hide' behind their game ids and create a alternate life for themselves.  Behaving and responding in ways that there's no way they'd dare do so in public. Mainly because such actions would invariable result in being taken out to the parking lot by the targets of their 'joking' and being beaten to within an inch of their lives. Some of them develop an inflated sense of self-worth and inflict their convictions on others with no tolerance for alternative views.

Some believe their k/d ratio or skill at wielding a virtual vehicle ( Aerial, aquatic, or ground ) elevates them in the intellectual food chain of the real world.

Others of us are who we are.  If you encounter me in real life, you will find that I'm the same as I am in here.  I have nothing to prove. I play for the comraderie and revel in the virtual world we are so fortunate to enjoy. I still think that 'pong' was a pretty neat idea, so watching debris falling off a plane I'm shooting at ( or, in most cases, riding in ) is really cool

The problem I see is where these different cultures collide. If I insult someone,  it is something I would say to their face.  That doesn't happen very often.  When somebody insults me, I treat that the same way, that they mean what they say.  So.. if somebody who's hiding behind their ID starts flaming away at me, I assume they are sincere in their attacks.  That can hurt.

Now, a typical response would be, 'It's only a game.. get over it'.  AH is a game, yes. The social interraction that takes place within, is not.  We are all people.  This is not dungeons and dragons where the dungeonmaster factors in charisma on the effect of an attack.

Even if tirades are not directed specifically at me, they still have an impact on my enjoyment.  I don't like social confrontations, you can ask my squadmates. However, in the last year or so, I'm finding myself drawn closer and closer to getting face to face with certain individuals because I have grown weary of constantly having to stifle the urge to scream STFU to those so desperately deserving it.

And then there's the forums/BBS.  My God.. what a mess.  I'm drawn in by the same genomes that cause folks to look for blood at an accident scene.  The lack of respect and dignity displayed by those in here is simply apalling.

So this is my own grossly-exaggerated-valuable opinion I share with you, the AH comunity.

So, this is not a community and no one here is your friend.  That sum it up for you?

OK, OK, maybe i just have a thinner skin than most ;)

lazs, sarcasm is fun, up to the point where it appears to be more bitterness than humor.  Usually i find your postings to be funny (even the serious ones), and i'll admit to a chuckle at this one.

however, your example leads others to try who haven't quite as good a sense of humor.

just a few thoughts for no one, since no one cares.
