How did your kids' football season go?

Our Cascade Junior football team finished 1st. 6-2 record with 4 straight shut outs. We begin the playoffs this week-end.  Link to all the pics I took during the season can be found here.

My son was 2nd string (he's a first year player) and saw alot of playing time. Only 2 of the 15 first-year players played on the 2nd string, the rest were on 3rd string, so he did okay for a first year player! He knows he's got alot of work to do in the offseason to make the 1st string though, he's a tailback and Safety, in Tailback position, his sense of running is great, good spin moves, finds the hole, but he's not the fastest guy on the field.  In safety position, he had 2 INT's for the year, but again, his speed needs improvement.

The teams season went pretty good. I think they had two losses. Kyle was second and third string corner, linebacker and safety. He only got to play when the game was decided. Even 10-12 yr old football here is very competitive. There's like 30 or so kids on the team. First year players like Kyle aren't going to see any meaningful action. But he gets a kick out of practice. He's been laying down some good hits every so often. But it's kinda like baseball, unless you're coaching, your kid might see minimal action. Doesn't really matter how good he is. Not saying that kyle should be first string, but theres other kids who are fast AND strong and oughta be a fullback or something, but instead they're on the line.

Lotsa 'daddyball' in this neck u the woods.

Ditto here referencing playing time...but our coaches told us up front that only the best will play 1st string, unless the game is decided, like yours...luckily none of our 6 coaches have kids on this team.  We have 43 players, (had 240 that wanted to play when sign up came around in April!)

I like the coaches mentality playing only the best, that way the kids that want to excel have to earn it.

Sounds good. Usually all the coaches kids mysteriously end up in the backfield.;)

Started a little rough but ended great. We started out 0-2 and thank goodness they were non-conference games. We ended the regular season with 6 straight wins and in first place in the conference. Two of those wins are against the teams we lost to in the first two games. the last game we came from behind at halftime down 19-7 and won 20-19. We start playoffs on the 3rd against the team we just beat 20-19.

Down here we have 24 kids on the team. That is the perfect amount to have after we had 34 last year and were undefeated until the championship game. As for the biggest and fastest being on the line I like having the best athletes on the team blocking and have pushed for it to be that way for the last two years. It sure does make a difference in the fourth quarter because the other team is getting punished and then I can stick in my subs and let the big boys (who are 2nd team backs) get some carries.

Our offensive line weight averages counting tight ends is 80.28 pounds. My son is the lightweight at left tackle weighing in at 71 lbs. Thank goodness we only have to weigh in once during the season.

Thanks for the update. Sounds like your team "cowboy'd up!" :)

Our "Sweet Pea" division as they call it, is set up with the following criteria:
8 year olds 81 lbs. - 110 lbs.
9 year olds 76 lbs. - 100 lbs.
10 year olds No minimum - 90 lbs.
11 year olds No minimum - 75 lbs.
There are 5 divisions for each team, age groups from 7-14 years old with various weight requirements so that they evening match up.

The kids are allowed to gain 1 lb. per week after the initial pre-season weigh in. The season is 8 weeks long (not counting playoffs).  My oldest son (9 y/o) started out at 81 lbs. and now he weighs 87 lbs. (Gear on)  Our goal in the offseason is to keep him fit, and under 90 lbs.  I'd venture to guess our offensive line avg. is roughly 90-95 lbs.

This being my first season watching this age group, it amazes me how intense they are, and how hard they play.  The kids grow into little men with the disciplines that football offer them. Its carried over into my sons "work ethics" regarding homework too.

Sometimes it amazes me at how hard they will hit each other in practice but then turn around and barely hit another kid from the different teams. We have our first playoff game on the 3rd of November. So tonight we had our first cold weather practice and boy you could have taped eggs on helmets and not gotten them broken.

Whats "Cold weather" considered in AL?  It was 49 deg. last night at practice here...mid-40's tonight with rain forecasted. :cry (The kids love practicing in the rain, the parents do not...)

yep it can get cold here but usually when its cold here the wind is howling and you have high humidity but decent air temps when the wind isn't blowing out of the North or Northwest. High temps today here are 59 with lots of sun but a steady northwest wind about 15-20 mph. then tonight we are looking at that same wind for practice with no sunshine....BOY I love this time of year with football.
