The thing looks incredible.  I think its just a beta-unit for a space-based Hyatt Regency they are going to launch in 2004.

I'm following the progress of the station as well, Deja.  My 6 year old son is showing a very intense interest in it.  Amazing stuff.

Hehe, a beta test would be a good analogy. It's not much more than a political and scientific showcase as is, but who knows? It could feasibly be used as a starting point for a future large station, with perhaps industrial applications.

I try and get a look at it as it passes over, it's one incredible sight to see the glare of the sun off it as it shoots over at high velocity.

Best watch MIR. Earth about to become a "hardhat only" area.

At least we had some control of SkyLab, I hope the Ruskies have at least that much control/contact with MIR.

Frosty, do you mean that everything from launch facilities to life-support systems is made by Russians? It's not right, US helped a little too.

You must be referring to this:

Quote
The mission was repeatedly postponed because
of cost overruns and engineering setbacks
before the critical Zvezda went aloft in July.
Another Russian module, Zarya, and the
U.S.-made Unity have orbited together since
                   November 1998.

Not to mention the fact that the US Space Shuttle is responsible for putting all the pieces together. If you are trying to say that Russia is responsible for most of the work/cost, I think you are misinformed. It is truly an international effort.
