"Open Range" movie
« on: November 01, 2005, 04:13:12 PM »
I'm trying to go back and rent movies I had intended to see but never got around to and found this one at the library for a free rental.

I searched and there was a 2 yr old, small thread about this movie.   Reviews were mixed, but I tell ya if you can put up with the slow pacing while the characters are developed, the gunfight is worth the wait.

I think this is Laz's kind of film.   The main characters reminded me a little of the captain on Firefly - making their own way and minding their own business, but ready and willing to stand up for themselves without fear if wronged.

Maybe its just me, but on another level I found it symbolic commentary on today's American society.

I liked the movie, but it was slow.

How do you see it as a commentary on today's American Society?

I like it, great sound quality when I saw it at the theater.

Red Dawn, the movie about the high school kids who take on the Russian army which invaded Colorado?   That Red Dawn?   You a Costner-hater?   That I can understand, but Duvall is untouchable.

I thought there was symbolism where the groups in the movie correspond to groups of people in America today.   The townfolk, the free grazers, and the evil rancher who controlled the town's lawman and a bunch of henchmen.     If I was to say Democrats, Republicans, and Libertarians you could probably figure out which was which and why.

The greatness of Duval and the beauty of Bening are overshadowed by the suck of Costner. It's like pouring bleach into a fine soup.

Pound for pound, I'd watch Silverado. At least Costner is outnumbered in that one.

I think I own Silverado so I can give that'n a look agin.   But I don't remember as impressive sound quality in Silverado.   The sounds of gunfight in Open Range were very impressive even in my simple home theater system.

I  agree that Costner is not a great actor.

Bening is nice looking, even without makeup.

Forrest Gump is good on a home theater. Nice surround sound effects.

"Open Range"?  Isn't that the one with Tom Selik and Tom Cruise?  Tom parks a HOT Ferrari into Toms garage and later they realize that Tom has something burning in the oven?

Excuse me, I feel the need to Hurl!!!!
