Turkey Day football question
« on: November 24, 2005, 11:26:53 AM »
Am I right in saying that the Cowboys and Lions always play in Turkey Day? Seems its been that way for years. Follow up question. If I am right above why is it that way?

Side note: Seeing the highlights in the past Turkey day games I sure miss watching Barry Sanders making a fool out of any defense he was up aganst.

BlueJ1,

As I understand it,  when The NFL first wanted two teams to play on Thanksgiving day no teams wanted to do it.  Two mediocore franchises,Dallas and Detroit, volunteered to play on the Holiday and the short practice week.  After a few years it turned into a traditional high profile game.

Other teams decide it would be in their interest to try to get on the tradition.  The NFL has up to this point  has told the other teams, you did not want to do this at the start and Dallas and Detroit stood up and volunteered to benefit the NFL therefore they get to keep the games.

Drifter is correct. Tex Schramm jumped at the chance to get the Cowboys on the Thanksgiving schedule. It gave them a gaurenteed national TV game every year. They managed to turn it into an advantage with opposing teams not being used to the short week.

I thought they were chosen because they were the ones most likely to be turkeys.

(he says as the score is tied at 21 with 1:48 to go)
