I'm trying to match the existing texture which I would describe as a medium wet appearance.  It's a basic sprayed on wet bump look but its' not big and splotchy.  Basically a uniform appearance of less than 1/32 of an inch, kind of a rough look as opposed to thick and heavy.  I'm assuming by what you wrote that the texture essentially acts as a primer since it pretty much is a layer.  That help?

Looks like little flattened out blobs on the wall?
Usually seen in southern states. Florida in particular seems to have a thing for this finish.

Probably so as to hide the sins of the rocker
Not that Florida has any kind of monopoly on chitty sheetrock work LOL
Are you going to be trying to blend in this texture to a area of the same wall that already has this texture?

Depends on the finish.
Even on already painted drywall if your going with anything with any kind of sheen to it and have done any patching. even nailholes you have to prime those spots first.

Usually all I do is hit those spots with the ceiling paint.
You can use a primer. But unless Im trying to cover some sort of stain or smoke damage I dont see the need to dirty up another roller setup when the ceiling paint works just as well

If its new drywall..use drywall primer..it's much cheaper than regular primer....if yer painting over another colour,use colour hiding primer(the expensive stuff)

LOL i agree Wagner sucks hind teat.  They are a throw away gun at best.  Most people look at the price though and go "what a great deal"  Usually have to do some drywall repairs after they throw it through the wall cause its a POS
