Hehe, still one of my favorite movies of all time.  The C-4 "squirrel grenade" was classic.

10 feet would be stretching pistol shot effect for a 357 magnum.  22 would be about 3 feet.

Hehe! That brings back some memories. (You got to remember that I am of the age that we rode dinosaurs to school :) ) When I was a kid corn was gathered by hand and put in the corn crib of the barn for feeding the cattle through the winter. It was common practice. Sometime, usualy fall or early winter, the field rats would decide this was a perfect place to hunker down till spring. Warmth , shelter and lots of food. What more could a rat ask for? Anywho............with the crops being harvested and the soil tilled and awaiting spring planting time, this was a pretty laid back time of the year on the farms around the area. So...........for entertainment and to keep the l`il corn devourers from eating up all the corn in the cribs, this was the time of year for good ole, down home, Texas "Rat Killings". Was loads of fun, beleive me. Nearly each week it was at a different farm. The women would get together and lay out a big spread of some of the tastiest vittles you could ask for. The guys would head for the barn and the cribs loaded down with rat shot and the fun began. It was our version of PS2 :). Full graphics, full realism and excellent frame rates. :rofl

out of the rifle it's good to about 10 feet.  never shot it out of a pistol before though but that would make sense.  anyway the new single pump pellet guns like the tech force or the gamo are producing 1100 fps and the hunting pellets are great projectiles on small game.  no need for a .22 in populated areas any longer.

On a side note...just how long does it take to properly "smoke" a 28 pound raccoon, and what is the best wood to use?

If you really do have a racoon problem, you don't have to kill everything that moves to solve it.

All creatures we consider pests follow just about one thing.  Food.

No food around, no pests.  Figure out what attracts them...the garbage for example?  The fish pond, obviously.  Remember, the smell will bring 'em in to investigate, so just securing the garbage won't keep 'em from lookin' around.

However, if you are able to simply modify the things that make your property strike the 'coons as a happenin' place...they'll just wander off.

Got some seriously big momo's around here, but they only show up to 'entertain' my dogs through the back window, then mosey on to my neighbor's house!

This advice also applies to bears, possum, mice, rats, etc...Whoever said think like a rat was right.  Figure why they're there in the first place (which is almost ALWAYS food), eliminate it, and your problem self-propels elsewhere.

Good Luck!

Almost forgot...

Racoons are best when smoked with applewood for at least 8 hours, served with mint jelly and cornbread.

I gutted it, weighed it down and tossed it in the lake to attract bream which attract LMB and snook.
