Good luck to you.  It's not impossible.

February 1st is three years for me.

The trick is to never cheat.  Not even once.

Congrats you guys!   My old man smoked Pall Mall Red's (Non-Filters) for 36 years and quit.  He's been clean for 10 years.

I never became a "real" smoker. I did smoke a pipe a few times but never did like the taste no matter what tobacco I tried. I DID love the way the room smelled after a bowl full had been smoked.

The main reason I never gave it serious consideration was because I watched my Dad, a pipe smoker all his life as well as an active tubercular hemorhaging on the front lawn one day when I was 6. The smoke agravated the half of each l;ung he had left to the point they couldn't sustain him. He died 6 months later never getting out of the hospital.

I also watched as a favorite Uncle slowly suffocated from emphysima (sp?) over 3 years. He stopped smoking but it was far too late. I got him to the hospital just before he passed out from lack of oxygen. He had refused to go as he figured once he got there he'd die. He also didn't want to be stuck with an oxygen tank while at home and refused to go to the doctor to get it. He died 20 minutes after I went home from being with him the first night he was in the hospital.

If you smoke think of the repercussions of this habit on your family if not yourself. It's not just you that pays a penalty for this habit, the same as any other adiction.

Hi, my name’s KONG and I’m a nicoholic.

(Resounding “HI KONG”)

It’s been 14 months since my last cigarette.

(Smattering of applause)

Wanted to welcome Bug and…

(More applause, murmured hellos)

Yes, yes, we all welcome you and offer our support.

Just wanted to congratulate you and to let you know it will be well worth the effort. Nic is a tough mistress but can be beat with determination and support of the group.

(Whispered affirmations accompanied by a loud “Amen” from the back row)

Last week, for the first time in my 42 years, with the help of clear lungs and a clear mind, I was able to run 5 miles non-stop.  I share my success with all of you…I…well…I couldn’t have done it alone.

(Raucous applause echoes through the room as KONG finds his seat through a blur of tears)

I quit several years ago.  After trying dozens and dozens of times I got pissed off and finally said to myself, I said "self, just ****ing stop and never start again" and I did.

All you have to do is make a commitment to yourself and keep it.  Just be honest with yourself and do what you know is the right thing to do.

Just do it.

when i quit (the first time) it went like this: i was sitting at a bus stop and it was the last sig in the pack. i looked at the cigarette and though "this isnt for me". so i stopped. 3 years later i started back up under the stress of senior year.

I'm pretty sure that the tobacco companies make the idea of quitting seem harder to do than it really is.

Yep them nasty ol' tobacco companies go out every day and hold guns to the heads of folks trying to quit to force them to keep smoking.
