$38,200.00 for 1000 pixels?!
« on: January 05, 2006, 07:39:29 AM »
I stumbled across this around a week ago.  A 21 year old student set up a webpage, the frontpage of which was just a big grid 1000x1000 pixels big.  The idea being that companies or individuals can buy a pixel for $1, a minimum of a 10x10 block at a time which will then link through to another webpage.  Its just a big banner page really.

What this young chap has done though is get the media interested and made it work.  The site is getting 2 million hits a week, he's got $999000 in the bank and is auctioning the last bit of space on ebay.  As the title says its currently going for almost 40 thousand dollars and has five days left to run.

Its one of those ideas that just makes you think "Why didn't I think of that".

and the ebay link

Amazing really.

I wonder how many people had the exact same idea but then disregarded it because they didn't think anyone would spend the money on it.

Why doesn't someone do the same thing at a third less cost. It would tank his high priced site.

You're better off buying 100 helium balloons and putting your advertisement in them.

There isn't anyway in heck anyone with a single pixel is going to get much 'bang for their buck'.

Its up to $152,000.  Yes, thats right.  One hundred and fifty two thousand dollars

For 1000 pixels on this dudes homepage.

There's still five days to run on the auction.  Whats the most expensive thing ever to be sold on eBay?

i heard last year about a guy auctioning off advertizing space on his own body. the idea is that the highest bidders would get their logo tatooed on the guy. i think K-Mart or something won the space.

Only shows that there are way too many dumb people with spare money to spend. The guy was smart to find a way to exploit the retarded.

it reminds me of plane campers in FPS games. about 12 of them wait for a single plane to spawn thinking that they will actually get the aircraft. my guess is that very few of those links have been used because they are so small. it reminds me of advertisement stickers on the side of stock cars, NOBODY WILL SEE THEM!!!!

PS
weaselsan, how much to post a "SMIDSY RULEZ" sticker, the trick is, it is linked right back to your sight.
