Earth Day
« on: April 22, 2001, 09:28:00 AM »
In honor of earth day I have shut off all devices that use electricity.  I will sit very quietly in a chair and breathe very shallow as to reduce my CO2 emissions.

What are you doing to honor the earth?

Instead of damaging Earth for Earth Day, I'm going to damage myself:

I'm going to smoke a lot of pot, drink a lot of beer AND hard liquor, eat a quarter of shrooms, drop 4 tabs of ecstasy and 8 tabs of acid, and sniff a lot of ether... and I'll see where I wake up after Earth Day and pollute it.

Well, our town has been adding all these new high-tech artificial turf soccer fields around town (much more eco-friendly than real grass, go figure) so I felt it was a shame not to go play on them.  Think of all of the hundreds of real grass blades I saved from trampling!

Gargoyle, you should have spent the day pasting artificial dandelions on the fake grass

The Earth is resilient. It has survived large metheorites, supernovas, ice ages, floods, etc. It managed to floorish every time.
What it suffers from now is an excess of humans.
We should continue wasting the resources, heating and poisoning the athmosphere until the earth becomes unsurvivable. Then the number of humans will sharply decrease and in a few million years the earth will revert to its original beauty.
It will happen anyway, so may as well not worry and enjoy while it lasts.

Miko2d - I like your approach to environmental protectionism. Although I suspect you are joking.

It's kind of like having repeated one night stands without using a condom. You know the inevitable will happen, and you will catch something nasty (and quite possible terminal) - but hey 'enjoy it while it lasts'. And if you happen to drastically alter the lives of the people around you - who cares?

A great philosophy to live you life by. Except, of course, it is completely and utterly bonkers.

Let's remove all restrictions on industrial emissions - pollute the seas and land with heavy metals, PCBs, dioxins, radiation. Because it will make all industrially made products cheaper.

And then we can 'enjoy it while it lasts.'

Fortunately, some people believe that the human race does have a future, and it is inextricably intwined with sustainability.
