They were refering to the logistics of patroling the Pacific. On the same note they had better armored carriers for the same reason. Too bad you didn't finish the article, it was very favorable to the Brit navy.

I take it, then, that you did not read about the refueling techniques, nor how the British carriers had better armour than the US carriers?
